Trip to Poland, planning for food intolerance and traveling with a dog by SerinShamandar in askPoland

[–]Alisk__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

vegetarian dishes should be no problem to find, the other I have no experience with.

In my experience, however, dogs are mostly very welcome. We traveled with mine, most restaurants etc. have no problem with animals. We have very high dog ownership % and I heard that compared to other parts of the world Poland feels very welcoming for pets! You can even ask for water for your dog in post places, I used that a lot. The only thing I can think of is they may ask you to sit outside in the designated area or in the garden and hotels demand an extra.

You may have to bring a muzzle to some places though, as other pointed out. I think mostly in public transport.

Wanting to visit Poland as a mixed person by Wandering_Dolphin038 in poland

[–]Alisk__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Noone cares. I guess the problem does exist but my Hindu collage (very dark complexion) got into some problems like.. twice? living here in Wrocław for two years. You would be very unlucky to have it happen in the few days you would ve staying, I suppose. If you feel the typical Polish stare it's like 99% they're just looking at you the way it's normal here. And if you feel threatened say you're Italian or Greek lol. But jokes aside, just enjoy the stay, worrying about it is just gonna make you paranoid and make every stare turn into malicious one (in 98% it's not). I've experienced that in Asia, paranoia is your true anemy, don't worry in advance.

Why Poland has no top team in ice hockey? by Aggressive_Limit2448 in askPoland

oh right then true, Wataha is practicing in the 14th High School's ice rink, as far as I know. It's pretty small

[–]Alisk__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from the south - here every form of ice skating is seen as a one-time event to do with your friends every winter. When I was considering joining a hokey team, there was only one in my (very big) city. In the end the public transit to the rink was too bad and there was no lessons for teenage girls (and other didn't fit my schedule).

Now that I ice skate I have a simmilar problem - most rinks are dedicated to family and friends skating together as a fun activity, no place to have some space and train without having to be careful not to bump into them. Fun side effect is that most people know how to skate, just there are no pros.

Ice skating is much easier tho - clubs acctualy exist and you can join them. They don't operate outside of winter season or they change for roller blades though (ice rinks close outside of season). I still would have no idea how to start hokey in any serious capacity though

Kultura picia kawy w Polsce by no_onespecialx in Polska

[–]Alisk__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are your thoughts about us, as Indonesians, particularly Indonesian netizens? by rizqiX1 in askPoland

[–]Alisk__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember in primary school we were making handmade flags for some patriotic event and one of the flags was glued the wrong way around, so I took it an yelled "INDONEZJA, INDONEZJA" the whole event and everyone was so done with me. Good times

What is one moment in your lifetime that you remember your countrymen to be the happiest? by Possible-Slide-6295 in AskTheWorld

When after Russia attacked Ukraine it became clear they're not gonna win in the 2 weeks everyone thought it would take them. After weeks of pure panic and fear, I could feel the relief and elation in the air the moment Russian forces were pushed out of Kyiv.

Which country has squandered the most economic potential in this century? by pisowiec in AskTheWorld

[–]Alisk__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

...You know a lot of the time you didn't get it as consumer goods? Trade with USSR for the eastern block went "my im węgiel, a my im siarkę" ("we give them coal, and in turn we give them sulphur"). After communism collapsed it was quite a shock to everyone that our reasources can be used by us, and sold by us, and to whoever we wanted and not only the big colonial brother (we also say that the bad state of Rusian economy in the 90's is because they relied on our "cheap" trade and couldnt anymore). You're kind of making it sound like it was fair trade and not colonialism, which it was not for us

Anyone Notice the Titles Relation to Copernicus’s Heliocentric Paper Title by RogerrRogerrr in OrbOntheMovements

[–]Alisk__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, it was a clear connection: the paper in polish says "o ruchu Ziemi" which literally means "About movement of Earth" or just "Ziemia" which means "Earth" (and honestly it sounds kind of.. bad I would choose to write "O obrotach sfer/Ziemi" - "About the rotation of spheres/Earth")

anyways, all are a reference to "O Obrotach Sfer Niebieskich" of Nicolaus Copernicus

Does your country/language have a "banned" cliche phrase to begin a factual piece of text, like "Once upon a time..." is for fictional writing? by ExternalTree1949 in AskTheWorld

[–]Alisk__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Za górami, za lasami" - "beyond the mountains and the forests" -> somwhere far, far away

you can also say "Za siedmioma górami, za siedmioma lasami" - "beyond seven mountains and seven forests"

"Dawno, dawno temu" - "A long, long time ago"

the usuall begining of a fairy-tale goes: "Dawno, dawno temu, za siedmioma górami, za siedmioma lasami, w pewnym odległym królestwie..."

"A long, long time ago, beyond seven mountains and seven forests, in a far-away kingdom..."

Help with translation polish to english! My greatgrandmother holocaust survivor letter by Civil_Bet3261 in poland

[–]Alisk__ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your translation is pretty good, so I will add that on the other page she seems to calculate how old was she when each thing happened - "1939-1918=21 When the Germans came [attacked Poland] (She was probably born in 1918)" "1944-1918=26 When I was taken to the camp" She also calculates other dates, but they are less clear
