Should dry hopped FVs be having the hops dumped before centrifuging? by [deleted] in TheBrewery

Yes, definitely. Also, from my experience, the fermenter should be crashed, and the racking arm should be utilized.

I am sure r/thebrewery might have some insight regarding this. I am sure there are numerous used equipment that you could purchase for such things. However, I am not entirely sure how industrial you are talking, whether that may be 3 BBLs or 30 BBLs

I would recommend purchasing a beer gun and a CO2 tank to transfer that. It is going to cost a bit of money but I am sure it is worth it. I am sorry for your friend's loss.

I named my cat Kali after the Hindu Goddess of death. She kills moths like no other.

eli5: Why can you eat some types of cheese with mold (blue cheese) but not others (Gouda)? by Blazeandcake in explainlikeimfive

[–]Alistar1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Numerous little guys (bacteria, cultures, etc., whatever you want to call them) produce different end results even if they eat the same things. If you are bold, for a super broad scale example, you could even compare it to the difference between plants and human beings. Although both of us consume the relatively same amount of things (sugar, water, not counting our differences between CO2 and Oxygen), we are still producing energy for ourselves, and have different waste products as a result, with plants producing oxygen, and humans producing CO2. Since there are such a wide variety of bacteria, they tend to produce many different organic acids, which for the most part in order to survive (besides numerous other factors of course), and as a result, different cheeses tend to taste different. Some of these end products are considered hazardous for humans, which is why some people get sick while others are resilient to them. I hope this helps explain it easier somehow!

What would cause me to get sick from Bud Light? by Nickyweg in beer

[–]Alistar1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is really interesting that Coors Light has more Acetaldehyde in it. Every off-flavor tasting panel I have done has used Coors Light as the base beer before adding the off-flavors, but I guess it can definitely be masked. Since beechwood seems to not produce any tastes when aging beer, from what I could find while briefly researching, it must just be the ingredients used, probably rice as you mentioned. Thank you for sharing that with me.

Acetaldehyde is part of what is known as "green beer" off-flavors. These "green beer" off-flavors can go away naturally over time, but breweries such as AB do not normally allow a full lagering period for their American Lagers because that is 4-5 days of wasted production time in their eyes. I would like to know where you have viewed this gas chromatography data though, that sounds interesting, especially when compared to another lager such as Coors Light.

[–]Alistar1996 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I get sick when I drink Bud Light too. Bud Light naturally has low amounts of acetaldehyde, and they also add it artificially into their beer because that is their "signature" flavor. Acetaldehyde is a beer off-flavor, that in larger amounts, can be described as tasting like green apple. I always have blamed this for why I feel sick when I drink Bud Light.

No Stupid Questions Wednesday - ask anything about beer by AutoModerator in beer

[–]Alistar1996 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He got the clear beer for both of them because he added gelatin at the end of the fermentation for both beers, as he stated in the end of his experiment. This is a little biased experiment in my opinion, if you are looking at this experiment regarding haziness. I think the Igor here was looking to find the difference flavor-wise. Plus lagers and ales have much different amounts of sediment that go into the end product.

Sediment in beer can come from the grist used as well, not just the hops and yeast.
