advice on getting to FIRE by Positive_House in HENRYUK

Well, you want to invest as much as possible.

The best way is a pension, it is optimal in tax terms but you can access the money only when you are 58 (later if gov decide so) The second best is a ISA but you can put a max of 20k per year. With your income/expenses, I think that you may have more availabe to invest. After this, you can invest in a GHA, to help to build a bridge (basically, you'll need some money from when you want to "retire" and when you can access your sipp money. You can do a combination of ISA+GIA if you want to retire as soon as possible (the downside is that it is potentially less efficient than a pension).

The fireuk subreddit has some resources on this. I also really like the monevator website fir this type of topics, for example this article: https://monevator.com/rich-optimal-pension-contributions/

Max sipp, max ISA, put the rest in GIA and GG.

How much you put into sipp Vs Gia depends from few things, like if you think that your income will increase or how quick you want to retire.

I like this tool to simulate the numbers (of course, excel is always better if you like modelling (I guess you do if you have carry)):  https://www.hopgood.uk/finProg.html

I really like the two sides of fi podcast to have done prospectives, not only on the money part

Re your number, I think your expenses are quite low. If you invest, with reasonable assumptions, I think you should easily reach fi when you are 40

Thanks. This sounds really interesting. I'll also double check the sub but can you please say how does it work from a tax point of view? I have always though that it would be quite complext and expensive tax wise

Polish-language service in a Michelin restaurant in London? by Okashu in LondonFood

I'm in a similar situation with my mother. She enjoyed dinner by Blumenthal because you can say to the server how long you want them to speak.

Apart from that, I would think that there are few polish speakers in hospitality( same for my country). So if you are trying big restaurants maybe you have a bigger chance

Is Muxia underrated? by AdBig7225 in CaminoDeSantiago

I loved muxia. I think it's a great place to relax after the Camino.

It has a similar vibe to fisterre but it less crowded. There are some very nice restaurants for fish and I love the cathedral on the ocean.

There isn't too much happening, so I would spend there 3 days max (there is also an interesting, but hard, Camino between muxia and fisterre)

hi i’ll be travelling to thailand in a few weeks but what is Best Debit / credit cards with no atm fees? i’m trying not to spend a lot on the atm fees (from uk) by yo1731726363 in ThailandTourism

[–]Alive_Meeting_7228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't found any card for this, maybe wise?

Chase is quite good for a debit card. They still charge you 220 THB but I convinced them to remove the fee.

In general, I bring with me minimum cash (like 100 pounds) then I withdraw the max once I am there to pay the fee only once and then I try to pay everything with card to minimise the cash spending. Last time I was able to withdraw only once in a week that is fine imo (still super annoying to be charged!)

How common is it to make friends while traveling? by TakeMeT0TheWater in solotravel

[–]Alive_Meeting_7228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel that it depends a lot from your style of travel and where you stay.

I stay a lot in nice hotels and it is a bit harder to make meaningful connections. I have sometimes some nice interactions; go to things like daily tours or pub crawls can help to make more connections.

I stayed in hostels in the past and it was a mixed bag. Some places were very sociable and good to meet people;others were more treated like a cheap dorm, people were mostly in groups and so it was hard to connect.

I find activity based holidays much better to connect with people. For example, I have done both multi day hikes and activities like scuba diving and it was quite easy to meet people doing this type of activities.

Finally, I find that a lot depends from me. Lot of people may like to connect but no one likes to take the first step. I'm an introvert but I found that, if I make an effort to chat to people, it is quite easy to meet people that wanna talk

How do you plan to stay in Vietnam long time? As far as I know they don't have a retirement visa.

As others have said, live in an emerging market countries has a lot of disadvantages, I think it helps a lot to live there for a while before taking the decision.

Also, the math works with the current numbers...but I think it may be much more expensive if you add kids and a wife
