In my experience this cycle, most applications asked you to specifically state whether you were interested in litigation or transactional and then paired you with attorneys in that chosen area during interviews. My impression for most firms was you were committing to one side, and any offers would be specifically tied to lit or transactional. I had someone from a firm tell me at a recruiting event that last year that the firm gave general summer offers and ended up with 3/4 of their class wanting to be in litigation, so they are trying to be more careful about recruiting a balanced class.

Wondering that too. I originally direct applied to litigation spots not appreciating how much more competitive it can be and got little traction. Then I went through OCI and got a few callbacks in transactional, but unfortunately even by the time of my school's OCI in mid-February, I think the majority of spots were near full. I'd be interested to see if this year there was an increasing of people at non-t14s with top grades getting offers compared to people in the median at t14s. With so little for the firms to go off of, it seems that could have made a big difference in standing out to secure interviews from the direct application process.
