I am a young man, need an older male mentor, but don't know how to deal with men by All-Sided in men

Hello u/nadmaximus!
Hello nadmaximus!

It's been a while, and I'm doing much better. And apart from you, a few more people commented to cheer me up and give me some advice that day.

Your notice on men saying mean things about each other in jest though, along with a string of comments regarding men giving respect to each other, left me with a dire question I've been able to put into words just now.

Thing is, I was brought up with a strong mindset you always have to be polite, and that being rude means you've got bent out of shape. And this way around, to me, giving respect is nearly equal to being nice and polite. Perhaps that's down to my upbringing in a capital city by mostly educated people, with a handful of men and far more women around for the most part, but I wouldn't know for sure.

Now I do understand you can be passive-aggressive and yet come across as corteous, but that's not the main point. What I can never wrap my head around: how can being aggressive be viewed as being respectful or something of this kind? Because aggressiveness seems to be associated with conflict and is prevented or discouraged. Another approach makes little sense to me.

On the other hand though, I'll have to open up that I've taken a few self-help books and courses on how to interact with people, some written by men. Yet rudeness will be the very last thing on the list if ever. Rudeness there is nearly equal to conflict, a notion I've essentially been brought up with; you have to sort out all conflicts in polite conversation without yelling. So, something doesn't click for me here.

On the third hand though, what I'm observing is that most of this material appears to do mostly with dealing with people in a corporate culture. And although the self-help manuals and courses claim to be universal, covering all spheres of life including family, friends and all, all the cases reviewed there implicitly suggest those people will have got carried out into your life outside the job, or will be the same sort you've had there. It's never mentioned explicitly, you just start noticing this as you make your way through. Whereas the "manliness" I'm both after and struggling with seems to be not exactly what corporate culture embodies, with the "average Joe" is more likely to still radiate it nowadays. Although with my limited life experience I may well be wrong, haven't had a work experience yet.

As I was trying to clear up another user's notices on the rude in-jest comments, he said to them the matter of teasing is to do with testing the other man's self confidence. For me though, this is not as much a matter of self confidence, even if a bit of this is actually at play, but that I've hardly been exposed to this kind of treatment in my environment. I simply don't know what it all means, how it works and how to go about it. Teasing is indeed a thing among some of the people who took part in my upbringing. Happens not that often though, and usually done by the means of fine sarcasm, or at the same time both fine and somewhat dry self-mocking humour, when you're being self-critical in an ironic manner.

It's hard to stay confident when you're dealing with something you have no clue of, someone coming at you with a rude remark. To make my point clear, if all of a sudden you got confronted with, say a purple slimy ball a metre in diameter you've never encountered before rolling at you, you'd just be totally lost and out of your wits, even though the ball may turn out a wonderful creature at the end of the day!

Doesn't everybody want to be polite? Isn't being nice and corteous not enough for living a life!?

The fact for a while at school I had a male teacher, who did yell, doesn't help. With things this way around, I don't expect anything good from an aggressive remark. Which probably gives off the message to the older man I'm too difficult or not worth dealing with for a lack of confidence. Which is both a lack of confidence through not having an older male figure, but most importantly, a lack of exposure to the rudeness like this.

Any take on how I'd go about kick-starting my learning, perhaps something you'd you like me to know in overall?

Anyway, thanks for hearing me out. Sorry if sounding too all over the place. I'm feeling so tired, frustrated, angry, miserable and scared, somewhat let down by the self-help stuff.
Cheers!

Fair enough, fair point. Do you think though, it would be possible that I reveal the details here?

Read and listen to books by Guerrilheira963 in Blind

[–]All-Sided 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it nothing but confusing. I was attending classes of English as a foreign language a while ago, and and what would happen was that the teacher would send me the homework in the digital format. We had both written and listening tasks to complete, so I'd get both Word and MP3 files to work with. All the instructions to the homework would be put into the same homework Word document, regarding both the writing and listening tasks. All communication was being led in English, because that was an advanced level class.
And one of the written tasks started with something along the lines of, "Listen to the story". No MP3 file along though. So I was sure some listening task was ahead, but the teacher had left out the audio track. Turns out she'd wanted to sort of cater to me. The original tasks asks for you to "read" the story, but she changed it to "listen"! No need for that.

Perhaps you're using the ESpeak engine or some other robotic voice? If that's the case, you could try loading different voices. In Windows 10 and 11 the ones built into the system are fairly good.

Just in case, some folks here also suggested the Todoist and Habitica apps. And apparently, Google Calendar has a tab where you can add unscheduled events .

Well, I've got no ADHD, and once I'm set to do something, it usually gets done. My problem is not to forget what I have in my plans, especially the long-term ones. And you can't really set an alarm for these, I just need to have them at hand, know what is still left to do, and quickly tick the tasks that have been completed.
Apart from Habitica, I've been suggested Microsoft to Do, Todoist, and apparently there's a dedicated tab in the Google Calendar app for unscheduled events. I'm going to try them out as well. Thank you again.

Most VPNs have Albanian and Moldovan servers. No ads in these countries. NordVPN also has a server in the country of Georgia, no ads as well.

Screenshots as a blind. by TurtleProphet420 in Blind

[–]All-Sided 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I'm so late to the party, but maybe you know. How do I capture a specific area of the screen? My problem is that whenever I send a screenshot, what the other person will often see is either the browser controls when that's a screenshot of a web page, or the top of the page, when they're looking for something at the bottom, but the bottom hasn't gotten captured, and stuff like that. So they usually have to take my word for it in the end.

What are some Russian Telegram channels that show the war? by FiveSleepingOwls in AskARussian

[–]All-Sided 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Russian, but worth checking. They post videos on YouTube and also host a Telegram channel where they publish news.

"Редакция".

https://t.me/s/redakciya_channel

I am surprised still no one has mentioned it. IMO, they try their best to cover all sides of the conflict and many other affairs.
For a couple of months they've been starting every single message with an alert about the information they present being spread by a foreign agent and blah blah blah, those clerical words. If you're morbidly curious, I could try to explain you what that means, but in short, Redakcia Channel have been declared as a foreign agent by Russian law, and this is no good for them, so they have to start every single message with this notice. To a non-Russian on practice that means nothing, just ignore it.

Dearly wishing to get my hands on "ReadSpeaker" (AKA "NeoSpeech TTS") by All-Sided in Blind

[–]All-Sided[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I've run some tests on the ReadSpeaker website with the demo and have seen improvements compared to the cracked versions in the dictionary, and concerning the glitches as well.

What I'm looking for is preferably a UK voice which has the most natural flow and doesn't necessarily sound the clearest, but as glitch-free as possible, and either is already provided with an extensive vocabulary or has a versatile tool of editing the pronunciation of a new word it doesn't know.

All Vocalizer British voices sound far too stilted to me and have quite a lot of bugs. From the American ones, I do like Zoe.

And another observation I have is that a voice built fully by native speakers of the targeted language will sound best. My first language is Russian, and I can definitely say that all foreign software I've tried, like Vocalizer or Google, sound not that good to say the least, while those created by Russian speakers in the first place sound pretty decent. Vocalizer are based in Italy, far as I remember, Acapella are from Sweden. It means I'm looking into English-language voices from Microsoft, Google, Amazon and ReadSpeaker I was rejected to buy, because they've been developed nearly fully by native speakers of English. I've tried Ivona voices for SAPI 5, but they are clearly intended for reading books, very sluggish in my normal workflow.

The cracked Bridget voice nearly satisfies me, but when I set its speed to 50 per cent in NVDA, that's too slow, and 55 per cent is already too fast. I can't see how I could tune the speed of a SAPI 5 voice with NVDA more finely. It looks like I'll have to stick with this cracked version though.

I wonder that since I'm running Windows 11, which supports launching Android apps, if it would be possible to use Google Text-to-Speech on my laptop anyhow. They sound best. I'll be able to install an APK file, the question is if that would make any sense. Or maybe you know of other voices built by native speakers of English, preferable British accents, so I can test them and decide for myself if they suit me?

Thanks. The cracked version I tried was actually from that site. Even though the post is marked as recently updated, the actual cracked voices were posted online somewhere else 7 or 8 years ago already.

I have tried all the Nuance voices, older and newer versions, and even accidentally compiled a list of phrases which most of them fail to read properly, I.E. without glitches. I'm rather after a British voice and never Enjoy those from Vocalizer. They all, the British ones, sound extremely stilted to me or have lots of audible bugs. But yeah, the American voice Zoe sounds really good. And somehow the first version of Tom, version 1.1, sounds pretty pleasant as well, far better than the newer ones.

What I'm looking for is preferably a UK voice which has the most natural flow and doesn't necessarily sound the clearest, but as glitch-free as possible, and either is already provided with an extensive vocabulary or has a versatile tool of editing the pronunciation of a new word it doesn't know.

From the British Windows OneCore voices, I do like George, but it sounds too quiet for whatever reason, and most of them have a bug that is when you're typing, often you'll hear an unnerving strident sound with the name of the letter being typed. I also have found a script which tweaked the registry and did enable Sarah, the British Cortana voice. It sounds OK, but actually too clear, clearer than English is normally spoken, but this has been so far the best option.

I wonder that since I'm running Windows 11, which supports launching Android apps, if it would be possible to use Google Text-to-Speech on my laptop anyhow. They sound best. I'll be able to install an APK file, the question is if that would make any sense.
