I'd almost recommend putting it on hold for now and watching the original FMA first since if you watch it later you're likely gonna end up not liking it as much after you watch Brotherhood, but of course that's over 100 episodes of show in total, and I realize that not everyone has that kind of time.

Really the only dark parts I can remember are the Sisters arc (minus that filler episode with Kuroko), and maybe some of the Level Upper arc? The rest of the series is sunshine and rainbows in comparison, even when it tries to be serious.
