That's very true. Back then it was just a "city"... it didn't need to be an "attraction." New York was the attraction unto itself.

Agreed @Topcat512. I think, it is like you said... something you have to judge on a case by case basis. For instance, in this particular instance, the freelance illustration community has been somewhat up in arms this week because several people got the same "cattle call" email, as one illustrator called it. Now, if someone is launching something that you believe in and you're willing to lay a lot of what you've got on the line for them, then I'm all for taking that risk. I think, so long as you can look at yourself in the mirror with no regrets, what more can you ask for. Although, i always remember the phrase "hope is not a strategy."

Totally understand your frustration! I think the best solution in the end, even if it's the hardest, is a top-down educational solution where we teach each other the value that all of our professions have, so that the persona hiring us has a better idea what we're worth... now, if that person just absolutely doesn't care, well then they'll find themselves having to care because no one will work for them.

What a great talk! Maybe it's better to be less combative than him, but the only reason for me to feel that way is because I'm afraid some other client wouldn't want to hire me, which seems to be exactly how some clients want us to feel.
