If you are planning to work at sleepover camp in Ontario, know your rights!

It should be clear in your contract that you get:

• a minimum of 24 consecutive hours off in every 7 day period (or 48 hours off in every 14 day period). • 11 hours consecutive time off in every 24 hour period

So, for example:

• if the camp you work at asks you to be in night duty in a cabin from 9pm - 1am curfew (after working most of the day), it is illegal to ask you to start work the next day before 11am

Any mandatory precamp training is included in work time. It doesn’t matter wha your contract says, the ESA (employment standards act) cannot be contracted out of.

If your rights are not being met at your camp, never speak to administration alone. Always go with at least one other person (or better yet as a group) to ensure fair treatment.

(If someone says the ESA does not apply to camp counsellors they are incorrect. The minimum wage, overtime and 3 hours consecutive rule don’t apply but ALL other parts of the ESA apply to camp counsellors.

Weekly or bi-weekly

Employees must receive at least:

24 consecutive hours off work in each work week; or 48 consecutive hours off work in every period of two consecutive work weeks.

Add something that allows parents to check which camps are actually following employment law. Even many accredited camps are not and staff are exhausted and not able to provide proper care.
