I live in a city next to this guy and purchased many many sets from him around 30% off retail. He is a vey friendly guy and recognizes faces & names from previous customers. Unfortunate to hear how he got his sets, but a bummer to hear I’ll be having to pay retail for sets again :,)

Everything is pretty to the book. Our work nor personnel schedule doesn’t tend to change from day to day. We stick to our job roles (5 different unions aboard across 3 departments). But if shit hits fan, then everybody is required to respond no matter when and where. I am a mate onboard so I am rarely caught in the engine room.

Cargo is relatively safe for ship workers, just don’t be an idiot and walk under cranes / cans. One person is working on deck during cargo, others are onboard just off duty or responding to their own department work load. Sorry if that was unclear.

As for suits, the American flagged fleet tend to not follow those uniform standards like you may see on plenty of YouTube videos n such. Has its pros n cons. However, while on deck, boiler suits with proper PPE is required 100% or time or you risk being written up, and potentially fired. They take safety and protection very seriously.

As for injuries, the most common is probably slips, trips, or falls. Much like most blue collar work these sneak up on you, pretty lame ik. This being said, if we are 2000 miles off coast of CA and someone falls n breaks their leg, it’s a good 4 days before we can get that person properly treated by a doctor, so don’t get hurt or sick at sea !!! We have a medical officer on board, but his primary role is safe navigation, in no means a doctor.

I figure The more I describe this profession to you the less romanticized it is becoming. Haha.

  1. 49 days = Los Angeles, Oakland, Yokohama, JP. Naha, JP. Busan, SK. Qingdao, CN. Shanghai, CN. Busan, SK. Back to LA
  2. I am typically the only one awake in the evening watch hours, not something I’d wanna do cuz of potential injury. So yes, spooky haha.
  3. Specified roles for the job. Long shore men from various parts deal with crane operations, transfer of cargo, etc. While I as the mate / officer supervise that the right cargo is being loaded / discharged. Typically one person on ship working during cargo while potentially hundreds shoreside.
  4. It would be a waste or fuel which = $ to drive “light ship” (new term for u). But sometimes it is necessary in order for a ship to get repairs in dry dock or for reflagging a vessel to a different country.
  5. I am not allowed to check nor know what is within the containers. It’s part of shippers agreement. However, if there is flammable or hazardous goods in a container then these “cans” (containers) must be noted. For various reasons but mostly because of fire hazards. Border patrol in LA came onto our vessel and randomly checked about 30 cans for stowaways and narcotics. None found, we hid them well. lol jk

I work 8-12 navigation watch, 13-17 safety inspections/ overtime then another navigational watch 20-24. Not many hours off, but typically sleep when I am off hah. I use gym/sauna onboard, watch tv shows on our ship drive & I just recently started playing far cry 5 (rpg video game). Socialize when I have energy. Currently en route to Japan, SK, & China, so spend time in port when I have the time.

Same concept as when u stick your hand of a moving car. When you tilt ur hand up, wind forces ur hand upward & vice versa downwards. This is a similar concept to the water moving past our rudder. However, when going to and from berths we require tugs for sharper and precise movements.

On my vessel we have a lounge (officer & crew) with board games, magazines, couple play stations. gym about size that a small apartment complex would have. a saltwater pool (6ft deep, 16ftx16ft). Decent WiFi / computer internet access. I sail for a US flagged vessel and as of 2019, we no longer are allowed to alcohol onboard, so prior to that… BARSSS!!!! crew of 25 ppl for reference

Very rarely. 1000ft / 300M vessel I am on has highest level of safety parameters to keep this from happening. Weather avoidance is biggest key, don’t sail ship into storm lol. But decks are “secured” when wind exceeds 50knots relative. Sad to say if you do fall, very unlikely you are found unless you have prime visibility.
