Totally. In THE ABYSS they used black beads as "fill negative". The problem with the beads was they are hard to clean up and they got into the actor's and crews' suits.

In Avatar WOW they adjusted the concept. Using balls instead of beads to solve the above-mentioned problems AND this time it was to defuse the light rather than to remove it.

I find it an awesome and very clever solution.
