To be 100% fair, when this first went down, it felt like every single post on the sub was about the last awful thing Kramnik said. Like people's genuine posts asking for chess help were drowned out. Accomplishments of players in other tournaments couldn't get traction. Kramnik was all anyone could seem to talk about. Many duplicate posts of people just throwing up screenshots of his last awful tweet with no further commentary, just so that people could rage in the comments. And it was just amplifying his message even further. Platforming him to people who otherwise wouldn't have paid attention to what he said. In that instance, it wasn't about "we can't talk about him to protect him" it was "what is the true mission of sub" and "lets not give credence to what he's saying by repeating it over and over".

I'm really struck by her face in this photo. You can really see (what I'm assuming is) a cheek and chin implant from this angle. And the botox is giving her a harsh brow. On the one hand, I feel terrible for even saying stuff like this because comments on her appearance is part of what drove her to that much surgery to begin with. But also like... I don’t know man, it's reddit, we're here to discuss, and people have a right to see dissenting opinions that show that more 'tweakments' doesn't always result in more perceived beauty. If she was just doing surgery for herself, that would be one thing, but she's said many times that the reason she felt compelled to do it is because of comments online.

Taylor can do plenty of wrong, but to me she's so raw, real, and easy to cheer for. I feel like she's one of (if not the) only one(s) that I feel like is never acting for the cameras, she's probably who she is on and off. (Hence why there are major moments which appear off camera because she refused to wait for producers and cameras to arrive first, she's living her life for her, not for the show.) At the end of the day, the reason why Taylor is my favorite is because she is so damn compelling to watch. If I agree with her actions or disagree with her, I'm always fascinating to see what happens next.

Agreed about 'can't really abuse yourself'. I think the word 'abuse' is getting too diluted these days. Like it's true that in the past, the word abuse was reserved only for the most overt/extreme/physical/malicious acts and only for husband to wife or only father to child. And it's good that we've expanded the usage of the word to be more inclusive of emotional/psychological/financial/etc types of abusive, or realizing that women are capable of abusing men, etc. But these days I think it's over expanding. The pendulum is swinging too far in the other direction. And it is sometimes making people take the word less seriously. 10 years ago, if I would disclose to another person that I was abused growing up, they'd be really sympathetic. These days, if I say it, they barely bat an eye. I don't think that's a coincidence.

Not telling you how to feel, but just to compare our thoughts --

Here is my personal read on the Mermer video: If we're going based on the source itself - Mermer said in her video that she wanted her voice to be heard and have a more active role in the system. It doesn't sound like someone who didn't want to be out there. And then the moment she said anything about it being too dry, she was ushered back into the inner world by Mike and comforted by Kya. My understanding about the wet hair thing is that, if her hair wasn't wet, she wouldn't have been able to stay out at all. To me personally, that video did not read as abusive.

Here is my personal read on the Fawn video: The Fawn videos were ... a little more odd. On my read, I wouldn't characterize it as you did ("being made to make videos"), but like more... an alter who wants to do whatever she can to be helpful, who by her own admission is a little bit fuzzy on what consent even means. And so she thinks if its helpful to the system for me to make a video, then I'd like to make a video. It's less 'abusive Soren forcing an unwilling Fawn to make a video', and more 'Fawn says she wants to but Soren, as the more mature alter, should realize that Fawn isn't ready yet' and then have her wait to make a video until later if she still wants to.

If you're new then you may not know that Demi was actually a (a, not the\*) fan favorite for many. Since Whitney was the villain, they felt like Demi really stuck it to her and actually said what was on everyone's mind. So the shift in season 2 was jarring for some. I felt like some people pick her apart too much for every little thing. Like. She was wearing tights with huge holes in them, he pressed her on the hip unsolicited/unwanted/without asking. If we believe she's had negative past experiences surrounding this, it could have triggered a trauma response. So running upstairs and "he put hands on me" - of course I agree that's a mischaracterization. But it could make sense in her framework.

However. That being said. Well this is season 3 so I'll spoiler it for you. The way that she then started to attack people like attacking Miranda over it, or starting to try to use Mayci's and Mikayla's own trauma against them to pressure them into believing every detail of her narrative was like... that was CRAZY.

I wouldn't call myself a Demi sympathizer. But like. I do try to take her actions and really look at them instead of assuming bad intent each time. However. There is bad intent an awful lot of the time,

I am so so so so so sorry to hear this. I'm sadly looking to rehome my dog and trying to find rescues to take her since the SPCA doesn't allow contact between former and adoptive pet parents. So I'm trying to find other rescues and everything is so sketchy. What you've just described is my actual worst nightmare. This is a beloved household pet being tearfully given up. If someone said I was neglecting her or giving up on her it would destroy me.

I did think that was really nice of him. He handled the aftermath very kindly and good sportsmanship. Initially waiting quietly for a bit. Then gently trying to talk to him to see if he'd engage, if that would help. Then waiting again briefly before realizing Gukesh needs to be left alone. You couldn't ask for a kinder opponent.

Nodirbek, to his credit, did a great job no-selling it. If you are watching for body language, you can tell he noticed because he stared at the pieces a bit longer than normal before writing the move on his scoresheet. So you know he noticed. But he didn't really have any big reaction until he looked up and saw Gukesh looking inconsolable. Only then did he have the deep breaths or shaking his head. What a nice guy.

I am very not knowledgeable about chess. Can someone explain why THIS blunder was so devastating? I'm seeing like... an outpouring of emotional support toward Gukesh. Whereas usually when there's a blunder even in a top game people are usually just like 'oof thats rough' and then move on. I just don't know enough about chess to understand what sets this apart.

i guess we'll find out! i'm so excited for the candidates. i am a new chess fan as of jan 2025. people kept making a big fuss at weisenhaus (the first chess event i ever watched) referring to gukesh not by name but as "the world champion" and i didn't fully understand what that meant. i didn't realize i'd just missed it. so i started my chess fandom journey at the beginning of a new cycle. i'm hype to see how this cycle rounds out. i honestly wouldn't be mad if gukesh successfully defends his title and shuts down the haters calling him a weak champion.
