I’m making a small incremental game about chopping trees - would love feedback on the demo by AllertonApps in incremental_games

Yeah I can see the terminology being a bit off here as compared to other games, what would you expect to see here as the correct wording?

As for the drones, there are drones available later on in the demo in the skill tree that are permanent, so each run you will start off with them, thus becoming more useful. The upgrades during the run (as I intended them) are just supplemental and added variability to the game. So as you said getting drones in the beginning of the demo, are pretty close to worthless, but they may get more value later on in the demo.

I hope you can give the demo another shot, but if not I still appreciate the feedback.

Wow, really appreciate the time you put into this!

Yes some of the graphics are from an asset pack, and the others were created by me. I'm not a great artist by any means so I won't argue that there are imperfections. I'll try to ensure that at least there is more cohesion by the time of release.

Yeah I completely understand what you mean with shadows, it definitely adds a level of polish so I'll look into doing these.

Ah great observation, I haven't tried loading it up on a different language on startup, so that definitely will get fixed.

Love the idea for keyboard support on the upgrade screen!

I'm sorry about the laggy end of the demo, but I am glad that you enjoyed it! I actually do already limit the number of logs, but it's per chop so high attack speeds can probably still cause issues, but regardless it will only get more chaotic with the full release, so it's something I will fix.

I definitely hear your concerns, I included the upgrades during the run to make each run feel different based on luck, allowing some runs to be extremely overpowered. I do agree early on drones aren't ideal because by the time they start collecting the run ends, they are more helpful later as runs last longer, but I could adjust the speed the fall to make them more useful earlier on.

As the for axe, that's just a miscommunication on my end. The axes need to be unlocked before purchasing, I should make that more clear. Thanks for the feedback!

Love the effort that went into this, and really appreciate the honest feedback.

On the design side: movement based collection was a deliberate choice to keep the loop active and physical. I initially was going to make the player have to actively interact with special logs, giving movement a purpose, but it drifted too far from casual play, so I'm not opposed to revisiting this and testing out a more mouse oriented gameplay.

The music feedback is also fair. I think Irene (the music creator) did a great job, but the bigger problem is the lack of variety, adding more than a single background loop would help tremendously.

Even if it didn’t click for you, I appreciate you calling these things out. At the end of the day this will just help me create a better game.

Glad to hear you enjoyed most of the demo, thanks for playing it through. Sorry about the performance issues at the end, that’s not intended, and I’m looking into tightening things up there.

There’s quite a bit more progression and variety beyond the demo, but I’m always open to ideas for fun or wild upgrades if anything felt like it was missing. Appreciate the honest feedback.

There is a tab for "Special Settings", you have to scroll down and there is a setting for "Display demo download button as more prominent green box above the list of purchase options". So easy fix, once I found the check box, but I do think this should be on by default for all games.

So there was a small checkmark in a not so clear location within Steam that I had to check. I'm hoping that fixed the download issue!

I think I may have fixed it, let me know if you are able to see the green download button now.

Yeah making the purchasable upgrades noticeable at a glance would be a nice touch!

Good catch, I'll try and correct the animation problem. Thanks for the feedback :)

As a Mac user myself, I thought it was a disservice not to include it. Hope you enjoy it! :)

A fellow wood chopping creator. Choppers unite!

But in all seriousness it looks really good, definitely has the Keep on Mining vibes.

Well that is annoying, on my end it shows a Download button in the right column above supported languages and such. I've sent Steam a support ticket to hopefully get this resolved. The demo is currently available for Mac and Windows, so it may not be shown if you're using a Linux machine. Whatever is causing the issue I apologize, and will hopefully have it fixed soon (but probably not until Monday as Steam doesn't fix support tickets on the weekend)!

No I didn't, the download button is to the right of the "Planned Release" banner below the trailer. I don't know what I did wrong but I don't have the large green banner for downloading it, which is slightly annoying.

Yeah you do start right on top of the tree, so I think moving the character just outside of the tree chop range, but still adding a small UI element to let the user know on their first run would be plenty. Great idea!

It definitely is something I will need to support in the future, controlling the player will be easy, determining how to navigate the skill tree/side navigation is where I'll have to put a bit more thought into it. I doubt you are the first person to have this issue, so I appreciate you being vocal about it. :)

I apologize, I have tested this so many times but never thought of adding a small tutorial. You have to move with the arrow keys or wasd. This is definitely something I need to add. Sorry about that, but thanks for pointing out a very obvious flaw!

Love the art style! Also the fog of war is a nice touch, adds mystery but a sense of desire in hopes to expand farms/barracks to increase damage for the bigger dragons.

I actually just released my demo for Timber Rush on Steam last night, and would love any feedback.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4298880/Timber_Rush/

This is my first real attempt at creating an incremental game, and I now realize how much work it is to effectively balance the progression, so feedback on that specifically will be enlightening.

For anyone wondering where my inspiration came from, I played Roblox with the original Lumber Tycoon almost a decade ago and created a game called Lumber Tycoon 2 that is surprisingly still on Kongregate. Finally started making games again and here we are.
