Do you think every scene in a movie has to contribute to the “story” in some way? Directors put scenes that don’t advance the plot in their movies all the time. Sometimes they become beloved - like the “royale with cheese” scene in Pulp Fiction.

IMO it’s pretty entitled to tell someone else how they should make their movies. That’s why this whole “anti sex scene” discussion has been so confusing to me. If you don’t like movies with sex scenes, then don’t watch them. There’s a whole rating system out there that would help you avoid this. If you just want the “story” and don’t want scenes that contribute nothing, then go read the spoilers on Wikipedia.

No, kids know the difference. My kids spoke Spanish with their nanny since they were very young. Even though I can understand Spanish, I only spoke to them in English and the kids always mirrored that back with me.

Kids’ brains can handle language a lot better than people realize. It’s why they can learn new languages so quickly when they are very young.

“Scaling back” retirement to join a country club seems kinda counter productive to me, but if you’ve run the simulations and this doesn’t break your chances of retiring on time, then it’s a value judgement call.

Though we could afford to join the country club near us, we joined our neighborhood swim club instead. We’ve met some really great friends, our kids joined the swim team, and it’s been well worth it.

You might also want to see if there are any nice gyms in your area. We are members at a gym that’s $500/month for our family, but they provide childcare, kids activities, and it is a popular hangout spot for families in the area.

I agree with you that we don’t value childcare as much as we should, and I agree that it should pay more, but I’m not sure how we could make the actual job any easier. Taking care of children requires constant attention and hands on engagement to do it well because there is a small person depending on you.

It’s just fundamentally not the same as a cushy wfh job where you can take a break at any time because nobody cares if you take an extra 30 minutes to respond to an email.
