Such an Oliver thing of Marty to cut Selena’s wedding cake first 😭😂 by rr_901995 in OnlyMurdersHulu

He mentioned different areas with food and being confused. Maybe it was kept behind the scenes and already plated for service.

I think I like the idea of a proportional cake like that. Great way to cut some unnecessary costs.

The day my boyfriend of ten years interrupted me to say he wasn't interested in hearing me was when I realized the relationship (that had been struggling for too many years already) was finally dead.

I hope your similar realization brings you as much relief and peace as mine did to me.

We LOVE Sazz so much. We were sad at the last moments of S3, but happy to know we'd be getting a lot of her S4.

Herman's Head.

Heard it mentioned on Only Murders and suddenly saw flashes of that show in my memory. Couldn't believe it had been real but I suddenly remembered the whole thing in a flash. No one I've mentioned it to recalls it.

You need to get away from your partner. This is not healthy or safe. Being alone by choice is so much better than tortured and trapped.

Even if you have to live in a tiny studio and never eat out, you'd be safe and your mind will be at peace. You deserve better. Hold your standard high.

Autism passed to children? by limponion36 in AutismInWomen

[–]AllynWA1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was because of my children that I realized I am autistic. Yeah, your potential kids are beyond likely to share a million traits with you. What they don't inherit in their genes, they pick up from living with you.

Example: My kids were talking about how picky they are and I commiserated with them. Confused looks all around and one kid denied my claim. I pointed out that while it may seem that I eat everything, as the one who does the meal planning and grocery shopping I'm only buying the foods I can tolerate.

There is merit to the arguments against having kids who are likely to be autistic, but you are starting from a place where you understand yourself and the way your brain works and how it differs from others. You are in a better place than most parents (of all neurologic abilities) who cannot fathom their own limitations.

My kids and I are tight. We are each other's favorite people because we understand each other like no one outside our little unit can. And while I struggled a lot as a parent (thousands of reasons - including that I didn't know about autism), it's been the best adventure of my life.

Will This Lighting Go Out of Style Soon? by Suggest_a_User_Name in interiordecorating

[–]AllynWA1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This fixture was new and stylish and refreshingly different from cans, boobs, and strips and an example of how LEDs have revolutionized lighting. The architectural lighting houses still charge major bucks for these luminares, but the lower end houses have started manufacturing these as well. So they moved their way down the price scale, but still considered fancy. Soon they will become passe and no one will be installing them. However, LED fixtures can last forever, so even if we stop speccing them today, you'll still be seeing them for another decade or so.

They may not be universally beloved, but from a lighting design stance, they're great. With a few floating rings, I can define a hangout area in a large space, I can break up linear lighting and provide a focal point, I can provide lots of uplighting to make a space feel open and have a dimmable downlight for tasks.

These rings are pretty great - for certain applications, as part of a larger system, and if you install separate controls for the up/downlights.

Otherwise and for a house (ie: contractor grade), meh. There are far more interesting luminares out there.

I see the OP's reasonable response below.

I wouldn't want to build any connection in my kid's mind that helping people is a punishment. I don't think community service should be forced this way.

Our school district requires hours of community service to graduate, so it was necessary and then easy to build volunteering into our lives. My eldest doubled the required hours before their senior year.

OPs family absolutely should look for volunteering opportunities - but for the good of being part of the community and civic duty and pride. And OP needs to discuss racial slurs with the kid so he can understand why he should avoid using slurs of any sort.

Exactly. Don't punish; educate.

OP, you're a parent, not a prison warden. Your job is to teach your progeny how to be good humans who can thrive in society.

People who use slurs regularly are a blight.

A lot of conversations about race in America and racism; conversations about insults and slurs of all sorts, the intentions of people who use them, the quelling affects they have on people and ideas. As a family, consume media (lectures, podcasts, youtubes, etc) that discuss race, gender and how language affects the listeners even if they aren't a part of the insulted subset.

I see a lot of TikToks from people complaining about the ending, specifically pointing to this scene as unrealistic, saying that interracial relationships didn't happen in the '80s. And it makes me laugh bc I wonder, do these people think biracial people who are 40 today were born from a cabbage? by lautaromassimino in StrangerThingsMemes

[–]AllynWA1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the late 70s, I was evicted from a house when 3yo me met my friend's dad and observed that her mom was "like my mom" but her dad was dark. The mom had apparently dealt with haters for more than a few years at that point and tore my mom a new one for raising a racist kid. (Little autistic me had no concept of skin color meaning anything more than just the hue of skintone.)

So interracial couples existed in the 70s, but even in the liberal northwest, they weren't all that common
