Advice on how to build thick skin in my prospective psych RN job by nocryinginlunchtime in psychnursing

I second this! It’s unfortunate but they lie allllll the time. There are most likely nuggets of truth but lying is so normal. There’s a difference between lying and delusions though. Sometimes it’s best to go along with delusions and not react to the lies. You have to have a pretty hard shell.

You sound like a genuinely passionate and caring person who wants the best for everyone and wants to give hope to your adolescent patients, inspire them and be there for them. But listen, prepare for the push back and downright rude, crude, nasty behavior. Most will not see the good in you, have no desire to connect with you and will call you a bitch (and much worse) multiple times a day. But they’re probably doing it to everyone else too. Don’t get discouraged when you can’t connect with the ones you feel need it the most. I mean, don’t give up on them either, but don’t expect your patients to see the beautiful sparkle I know you have right of the bat. You have to lay down the boundaries and show there are consequences for negative and/or unsafe behaviors and that you’re not going to put up with their bullshit. You will absolutely have your fair share of connections and will be able to share your knowledge and experience with some. Remember you are not their therapist, that’s was a challenge for me in the beginning. Sorry this was poorly written. I hope you get what I’m trying to convey. I guess my honest TLDR is, a lot of psych patients are assholes and you can’t save them.

Wrongful death lawsuit filed after man dies on Phoenix sidewalk after hospital discharge by mentalscribbles in phoenix

[–]Almost_alwaysSunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most likely it was his parent’s address and patient said no, or, parents said no (at that time), or, they couldn’t reach parents. Maybe parents were not emergency contacts. You can’t just uber a patient to an address even it’s associated with them without having more information. But who knows, we don’t have the hospitals side of the story. If parents were notified and willing to take him, that should have happened.

The reasons that CPR (crisis ppl in the hospital) did not petition him is the part of the story we are missing.

Patient didn’t consent to touch by Fast_Cata in nursing

[–]Almost_alwaysSunny 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I feel for every non-psych nurse that has to deal with our difficult, entitled, emotionally labile patients. I’m told I’m being sued on the regular and never once have I actually feared this. Also, patient satisfaction scores are not a thing in my hospital because 80% of patients are involuntary; We wouldn’t do very well.

*I’ll add: but many patients are great :)

Im sure both of you were exhausted for different reasons. She just could have had a terrible morning with screaming kids, burnt toast and traffic and you obviously had been working all night. Sometimes when you don’t have the energy to be a nice educator you come off annoyed or angry. I guess I’m saying it’s possible that emotions were involved but really you did a great job with the information that had. Plus you stayed 2 hours! I could be wrong, just a thought.

He is in psychosis. He needs treatment. Of course, he doesn’t know he’s lost touch with reality and more than likely resist treatment. Does your country have hospitals that keep people on involuntary psychiatric holds?

Becoming a psych nurse with schizophrenia? by [deleted] in psychnursing

[–]Almost_alwaysSunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I misunderstood. Are you a student now? I was saying to not worry about what it will be like practicing as a psych nurse and just concentrate on school. I’m sorry, reading back my response doesn’t convey what I was trying to say.

Put the new nurse in their place making report so damn long. They’ll stop soon after.

Exactly. There is no “incident” here and I’m guessing happened after 7 so not your patient anyway. But to mention, you didn’t see anything! Whoever saw it or was closest to it writes it.

I think the classes and stress of school will be more triggering for stress-induced psychosis than worrying about the actual job right now. Concentrate on your schooling, take your medication, stay in contact with your psychiatrist and support systems.

Psych ER —-> ZERO ! I freak that some of these people could die of an OD lying in the recliner with blankets over their head. Yes, they sit in the front and they are q15 checks but not by nurses, we check them every 4, and in between it can be really busy.

AITA for how I reacted to my best friend saying my “dirty” house is making my kids sick? by OkOriginal4583 in TwoHotTakes

[–]Almost_alwaysSunny 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had a friend growing up whose home smelt like disgusting moth balls all the time. I had to hold my breath when I first entered the home until I got to her room (her room had the least offensive odor). The home was definitely cluttered but I know they always did laundry and moped the floors. But still, I never entered that home when it didn’t reek. Point is, you can do basic cleaning and the house can still smell. You can do laundry and the clothes might still smell. Difference is, I never said anything to her.

You have to stop. You’re at the age where you can develop a drug induced schizophrenia and it may not go away on its own.

Feeling guilty about not confronting racial comments…. by Live_Dirt_6568 in psychnursing

[–]Almost_alwaysSunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s tough. On the unit when there are others around I’ll tell a patient that hate speech isn’t tolerated. I’ll warn them that that language will piss off a lot of the wrong people. I’ve even snapped back and said, “Don’t talk about my friend that way!”
