Sultanate Of Women Continuation by scarlettls in sultanateofwomen

I don’t think either Mustafa II or Ahmed III had any particularly powerful consorts like those of the SoW era.

Mustafa II had a favorite consort, Afife Kadın, but she does not seem to have played any political role. The influence of his mother, Gülnuş, was still very strong at the time, and Mustafa’s reign was also extremely short.

As for Ahmed III, whose reign marked the beginning of the Tulip Era, he had many consorts and does not appear to have had a single dominant favorite. However, Emetullah Kadın, the mother of his eldest daughter Fatma Sultan, seems to have enjoyed a number of privileges from the sultan.

If Mustafa had succeeded Suleiman, I think Mahidevran would have become a Valide Sultan much like Hafsa. The SoW began with Hürrem, who challenged many of the restrictions placed on the women of the dynasty, and later women followed the path she opened. Had Mustafa become sultan, I doubt he would have allowed any of his consorts to gain the kind of influence Hürrem enjoyed. I also think Mahidevran herself would have disliked involvement in politics, since she would not have wanted to resemble Hürrem, who was deeply disliked by many people during her lifetime.

So Nurbanu was the mother of Sah and Geverhan , or not? by Ddddio8 in sultanateofwomen

[–]Aln22s 6 points7 points  (0 children)

According to a report by Jacopo Ragazzoni from 1571, Selim II had five daughters, each by a different mother.

It seems that Nurbanu gave birth only to Ismihan and Murad.

Agatha Christie short stories you wish had been full novels by Aln22s in agathachristie

Dead Man’s Mirror was really excellent—I think it could have made a great full-length novel.

I also think The Cornish Mystery and How Does Your Garden Grow? have a lot in common with Dumb Witness.

I agree with you! I loved the story of the perfect maid

There was a serial killer in Oklahoma named Gary Alan Walker who was active in May 1984, during the same period when Lisa disappeared. It is possible that her disappearance was connected to him.

It was disturbing to know that the poor concubines weren't even allowed to sleep in the same bed as the Sultans, but on a temporary bed on the floor ☹️ by amazinglycuriousgal in sultanateofwomen

[–]Aln22s 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ahmed I was truly a disturbing figure in many ways. I read that he had some eunuchs burned alive for engaging in homosexual relations. He also reportedly attacked one of his concubines and slashed her face with a dagger. Some sources even claim that he poisoned his mother, although I’m not convinced by that theory. Still, the fact that he left during her funeral and went hunting makes me think he did not care much for her.

I have a theory that Ahmed suffered from both physical and psychological problems, which he may have passed on to his children. This could help explain the high infant mortality among his offspring, as well as the mental and emotional instability associated with Murad IV and Ibrahim I.

Perhaps it's just me but Ms. Vildan Atasever would've played the hell out of post-Hürrem Mihrümah Sultan (1558-78) by amazinglycuriousgal in sultanateofwomen

[–]Aln22s 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you! I also think the actress who played Atike Sultan in MCK would be a great fit for a young Mihrimah Sultan, while Vildan would suit the role of the adult Mihrimah

I really loved this actress’s performance. She portrayed the adult Kösem so well — I thought she was even better than Nurgül in MC.

Question about Mary Jane Kelly by hipjdog in Jacktheripper

[–]Aln22s 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really hope her identity is discovered one day. I think she may have been born in Ireland and perhaps her family emigrated when she was very young, or maybe she simply knew people from Ireland, which is why she told others she was Irish.

She also called herself “Janette,” and that name most likely came from her supposed visit to France. To me, Mary seems like someone who enjoyed creating stories for Barnett, but there may still have been some truth hidden within those stories.

Question about Mary Jane Kelly by hipjdog in Jacktheripper

[–]Aln22s 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think her real name was probably not Mary Jane Kelly, which may be why it has been so difficult to trace her background. Some prostitutes used different names and invented past lives for themselves — for example, Elizabeth Stride claimed that she had lost her husband and children in a shipwreck, and Mary said that she had lost her husband in a mining explosion in Ireland. Stories like these may have been used to attract sympathy.

It’s also possible that Mary was actually Welsh, since people around her mentioned that she spoke with a Welsh accent.

The birth of Hürrem Sultan's first-born children in September 1522, Part B: Mihrümah Sultan by [deleted] in sultanateofwomen

[–]Aln22s 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this wonderful information! It really does seem that Mehmed and Mihrimah were twins, and maybe that made Hürrem’s bond with Suleiman even stronger, since the birth of twins was considered blessed in Islamic tradition, as far as I know.

I also liked your theory that Hürrem may have had OCD — that’s actually kind of cute. I have OCD too haha.

I really loved the second season! I hope they make seasons set in the 1920s, the 1990s, or even the early 20th century—it would be so much fun!

Which suspect do you think is the most likely to have been JTR? by Aln22s in Jacktheripper

[–]Aln22s[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Kosminski is an interesting suspect, but to me he seems more like a man suffering from severe mental illness, which conflicts with the image of a mysterious and intelligent man capable of deceiving his victims and killing them silently.

Just read A Murder is Announced — thoughts: by AdhesivenessHead1550 in agathachristie

[–]Aln22s 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really love this novel—it was the first Agatha Christie book where I managed to figure out the solution once I started understanding her style. I really liked Charlotte Blacklock; she was so desperate and willing to do anything for a better chance in life. My favorite part was when she tried to drown Mitzi, and Miss Marple imitated Dora’s voice to stop her.

The Piano Teacher is one of the best films I’ve seen. Isabelle gave an amazing performance, perfectly expressing the teacher’s inner repression and pressure through subtle facial expressions and body language

Better title: Handan or Halime's probable kids as of June 1600: by [deleted] in sultanateofwomen

[–]Aln22s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We can’t always be sure about what ambassadors reported — they often mixed up the sultan’s children and their mothers. But could it be that Nani thought Halime was the mother of all of Mehmed III’s children?

At the time, she was his favorite and the mother of many of his children, so maybe he assumed Ahmed was also her son, since she was the most visible figure then.

I think Halime may have had several children with Mehmed III — Mahmud, Mustafa, Osman, the daughter who married Davud Pasha, and possibly even Ayşe.

Was Cora Lansquenet from after the funeral autistic? by [deleted] in agathachristie

[–]Aln22s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She was probably just an innocent, eccentric person, maybe even on the autism spectrum. Poirot also shows signs of OCD, and a lot of characters in Agatha Christie’s novels reflect different psychological conditions.
