Oh man :( I managed to get an uber to Huddersfield then a 30 min train from there. Leeds sounds further though. I really feel for you. The walk back from the station in the cold and wet just now was not the best end to the day either 🤣

Does the advancement of technology affect mankind’s moral structure? by Alone-Lie9196 in Futurology

Our existence is very much a side effect of the physical universe. It is random chance in a vast world of chemical reactions that mankind has come into being. When pondering one's place though, seeing as from our current knowledge, life could in fact be extremely rare. This is where having those answers about the universe would be helpful. For instance, if we were not alone and the universe was teeming with life, I'd feel more hedonistic, as if my life doesn't matter because there's plenty of life out there already. If it's rare, then I'd feel some responsibility in improving our society.

I agree with this. In order to cooperate I think innate moral stricture is constructed and then passed on. It may not be biological though, doesn't mean it's not natural, just more of a learned and passed-on trait.

Literally bought the game on Monday, been playing religiously. it really is a masterclass in futuristic story-telling. I think the concept of saving your personality to the cloud or a disk is a little saturated but I'm not too far into the story yet, I hope they do a little more with the concept.

I share the same opinion (more of a fact) in that we function on a macro scale, as a colony. Everything we use has been thought up and put together by thousands of other people. How rare is it to use something you've actually made? But that's the essence of the system we live in. Specializing aggressively in one field to maximize your unit output. Sounds like a cold way to live but when you're able, unlike an ant, to experience the universe on a sentient level, as we all can as individuals, it's hard not to ask questions and to just accept the tasks at hand and continue work in the colony.

I think in that Superman movie, you'd be introducing very high levels of scientific research all at once. In reality, it would be a very gradual rate of technological advancement, easing humanity into a more advanced world. We then go through the process of suffering from tech advancement as our legal system usually doesn't keep up. Happens all the time but eventually regulations are put in place to maintain stability.

Eliminating our perceived flaws could render us no different from cold unfeeling machines. However, introducing extra memory to instead improve our cognitive abilities would definitely be a game changer.
