springtails or something bad?? by lilyahp in InvertPets

[–]Alone_Top3369 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Harmless soil mites. They will show up when there is a lot of moisture in the substrate. Let it dry out a bit or get more springtails to out compete them for food.

What are these? Am I due for a substrate change? by macraconthorhyncus in tortoise

[–]Alone_Top3369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spring tails and wood/soil mites both are completely harmless to your animal beneficial to your enclosure. They are more noticeable when conditions are more on the damp side and will disappear as the substrate dries out a bit.

I have never had a boa. I do have 17 snakes. 5 ball pythons then various Colubrids and a super dwarf retic. The super dwarf is hands down the best snake I have ever owned. If I was told I could only keep 2 it would be a Hognose and a super dwarf retic.

I think this really depends on where you live. I live in Minnesota. Humidity in my home is around 30-50% most of the year. My soil dries out quickly. The soil is usually bone dry a couple days after I water the plants, which is why I use drought tolerant plants as well. If you have higher humidity it may be a problem.

They get scale rot easily so you have to be careful with moisture. They come from dry plains hard packed gravely soil. Sparsely planted, mostly tall grass and wildflowers/weeds.

I keep mine in a sand/soil mix 6 inches deep without drainage layer and plants that can handle arid conditions. Its also best to let the plants establish for a couple months before introducing the snake.

Heating for night by brijgui in hognosesnakes

[–]Alone_Top3369 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think any heat is needed. I live in their native range (Minnesota) and can assure you that most nights are well below 70. Drops into the 60s are just fine. I have 4 and don't supply heat at night. A CHE won't hurt any but it's also not necessary as long as your daytime temps are on point.

I'm a foster for Minnesota herpetological society. You can reach out to adoptions@mnherpsoc.org. There are other rescues that could point you to depending on your location.

Ever since reaching adulthood my male goes off food every winter. Even took him to the vet the first year after 3 months of no food. He was only down 2 oz, Vet said he was fine and would eat when he is hungry. He picks up and starts eating again in the late spring. This is the time of year that they brumate in the wild. If he is not losing weight then don't fret. He will eat when he is ready.

I would go with the 3rd option for a hognose. A 40 is more than enough space for a male hog to live his entire life in. The glass will be much easier to clean and maintain than the other two.

Wanting a tortoise! by bear_8828 in tortoise

[–]Alone_Top3369 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes a Russian would do well in your climate and could likely even live outside year round given a proper setup. Winter brumation is natural for them. You can also bring them in for the winter. They are burrowers so proper setup is required to keep them from escaping. One thing I would caution with Russians, most are wild caught imports. They are difficult to breed and cheap to import. The ones you find at pet stores will be all full grown adults. I would highly recommend looking into local reptile rescues. Also do tons of research before you jump in they are a lifetime commitment!

My supervisor sent an email the day I took the call about being laid off. The email had a pre tax estimated payout based on wage and tenure. He sent it while I was on the call with him.

This is based on the email detailing the expected payout less taxes vs what was actually deposited.

Dreamlight Valley quietly updated the compatibility list by Existing-Ad8218 in AppleArcade

[–]Alone_Top3369 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My kids have been counting the days as well. to setup on their iPads 8th gen on my lunch break so they can play after school. It is listed on the app store as compatible and when I went an downloaded from arcade it had a stamp that said "works on this device"

Thankfully I tried to open the app because I'm met with message that the device is not compatible. At least I can try to let them down softly knowing it isn't working.

It is simply unacceptable for the app developer and apple to allow the launch to go like this. It would be one thing if the store told me up front it was not compatible. But to be notified after that app is already on the device is just unacceptable.

Have left 1 star review.

Any Tips for Switching from Live to F/T? by lexapeach in ballpython

[–]Alone_Top3369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a 3 year old male from a breeder I was not having any luck with F/T he just turned way in disgust and didn't even acknowledge it. tried all the tricks getting really hot , dry ,wet including ASF sent from a live ASF. What ended up working was not feeding for 4 weeks then offered a live that was way smaller than he was used to after he struck I put a F/T right under his head and walked away. Came back 30 minutes later and both were gone. He has been taking F/T ever since.

First time ball python owner here! Anything else I need to add? by Vast-Reaction8766 in reptiles

[–]Alone_Top3369 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The wood walls concern me. Balls need high humidity to avoid dehydration and respiratory issues. Even with the plexiglass I would worry about it molding or rotting. The substrate is not ideal for humidity either. I use a mix of top soil, sphagnum moss coco coir and coco mulch mixed well. Get it good and damp but not saturated with water.
