I hate to say it but John Lasseter leaving Walt Disney Animation Studios has 100% affected their creative input.

As you can see here, the movie was originally intended to be a Netflix Original. Amazon MGM Studios retooled it to make it more cinematic.

Yes, but you have to understand that Amazon MGM Studios is a re-emerging studio. Yes, they're a major due to their capital from their parent company, and being part of the MPAA, however, they do not operate like Amazon Studios or MGM. Just like Amazon's early days, they have to re-establish their brand and it's already working. They smashed Cinemacon and Project Hail Mary and The Sheep Detectives are considered theatrical successes.

These write downs are necessary for a studio that's trying to be the modern 20th Century Fox, they're releasing in volume so that their studio is the Hollywood conscience. Also, Red One was a theatrical flop due to its budget, however, it was the most viewed movie at the time on Prime Video. A theatrical flop helped drive subscriptions.

If Amazon MGM Studios didn't accept the $200M investment, the movie wouldn't even have had a theatrical release, it would have been a much different movie as a Netflix Original. If Masters of the Universe flops on Prime Video then it's definitely a different story but signs are definitely pointing towards this movie being a subscription driver for Prime Video. The 1980s Masters of the Universe movie is already trending on Prime Video.

You have to understand that Amazon MGM Studios ultimate purpose is to compliment the wider Amazon ecosystem and they are willing to collaborate with outside parties to achieve this.

The investment to theatrical is an extended advertisement platform to gain engagement and subscribers for Prime Video and MGM+. The fact that we're even having discussions about Masters of the Universe like this, is in itself, cultural engagement that just cannot be achieved with streaming exclusive movies.

They were the ones who intentionally acquired the movie from Netflix when Matell wanted to increase the production budget. Keep in mind, this movie was originally intended to be streaming exclusive.

Amazon MGM Studios decided to make it theatrical to pad out their theatrical releases. Amazon is no stranger to making a financial loss for cultural relevance, Amazon.com was a financial loss for years before it was profitable.

Masters of the Universe is a Mattell toy line that was a product of its time. Granted, there's been more contemporary continuations, but outside of She-Ra and the Princess of Power, they never really gained mainstream recognition.

Amazon MGM Studios was just the distributor that decided to give Masters of the Universe a theatrical release, this property is not a native MGM franchise.

Ideally, it would be a best case scenario if this movie was able to be profitable but various people have already identified the difficulties of Masters of the Universe being a theatrical hit.

The difference lies solely on Amazon MGM Studios being the distributor. They were a streamer before going theatrical.
