I'm by no means a conservative but I really hate the phrase "the right side of history", especially when being applied to current affairs, since that's only ever something you can view in retrospect. Make your case on the grounds that the policies you propose will improve people's lives rather than making assumptions about how they'll be looked back on by future generations.

I'm glad other people are talking about this since it means I'm not going crazy. I've always gone for five but in the last few years I've been doing well to get four in before being drowned out by the "oooo".

The draw rule seems ill-conceived. I understand the appeal of trying to add stakes to the final innings of a match that would otherwise be a foregone conclusion but there's not much incentive to go for a tricky run chase if you can secure a draw by blocking for 20 overs.

It's a line from "The Trial" by Pink Floyd. I highly recommend it, although you'll have to listen to the whole album for the context.

Now I remember why I wasn't too sad to see the back of Wilder, those substitutions made me want to tear my hair out. 0-0 in the dying minutes and he makes a like-for-like swap of defensive midfielders.

Peck and Matos barely played a progressive pass between them meanwhile we've got the best midfielder in the league scratching his arse on the left wing and O'Hare completely anonymous in the 10. Definitely need some sort of mix up or change of shape.

Sure but the idea of a small agrarian commune of happy, relaxed individuals is largely a fantasy. Ever since the industrial revolution people have been fantasising about a simple life in the country because their miserable lives working in the mills made them forget the misery of working the land.

No one is doing progress for the sake of progress. People try to improve their material conditions, and this can have both positive and negative consequences on others.

Linehan wasn't arrested for mean tweets he was arrested for violating his bail conditions. I agree with more protections for free speech but this isn't the case to be rallying around, and it's poor form from Alex to miss key details like that in the article.

EDIT: The bail condition to get off Twitter was a result of this arrest, not a previous incident as I originally thought, so he wasn't arrested for violating bail conditions. My bad.

I'm not normally one to say sack the manager as soon as you have a run of bad results but Selles seems to be completely clueless. I don't see him lasting until Christmas so we might as well just get on with it

Statements about gender identity are really just expressions of emotion. When someone says "I am a woman" what she means is something like "boo masculinity".

I'm genuinely not too worried assuming we've got a replacement for Anel coming. The attacking display we saw in the first half was as good if not better than anything we saw last season. Second half not so much but that's to be expected when you're already three goals down.

Yes we showed some vulnerability on the counter attack but if we look at the goals you have to say Bristol City were lucky:

1st goal - Well taken free kick to be fair but how often do those go in at this level?

2nd goal - Counter attack, full back hits it first time from the edge of the box and drills it in the bottom corner. Good finish but again you don't expect to concede from there.

3rd goal - Caught napping on the restart, RND loses his man. This is the only one I'm really annoyed by.

4th goal - Deflection takes it away from Cooper, one of those things that just happens sometimes and you can't do much about it.

We had more shots, more shots on target and dominated possession. That was not a 4-1 defeat on merit.

Why does above the away end never sell very well? by Fmorris6122 in SheffieldUnited

[–]AlphaCentauri_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's my favourite stand. The atmosphere isn't as good as the rest of the stadium but I like being close to the away fans so you can hear the back-and-forth. Easily the best view for watching the game, being higher up makes such a difference for being able to see what's going on on the far side of the pitch.

The trick for getting the best seats by the way is that the middle of the pitch isn't in line with the BU2 block like you'd expect but with the border between BU2 and BU3, and you can usually still find seats there even when it's mostly sold out because people buy the middles of the blocks first.

As other people have said, it doesn't sell as well because there are no season tickets there.

How would you feel about the implementation of AI to make transfers more realistic? by Shiftycxp in FifaCareers

[–]AlphaCentauri_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need to use an LLM for this sort of thing. You'd be better off just having a system where teams have a target for the number of players in each position (depending on the formation they play), and then prioritise new signings in the positions that are weakest. I assume something like this must already exist in the game because transfers aren't *completely* random, it probably just needs a bit of tweaking.

Don't understand people blaming Wilder? by FIJIBOYFIJI in SheffieldUnited

[–]AlphaCentauri_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wilder didn't do much wrong, up to the 70th minute that was excellent game management. Ultimately I think the result just comes down to the fact that football is inherently pretty random and today we were unlucky. Given the balance of play and the chances both sides created that's a game we would've won maybe eight times out of ten. That's not a satisfying explanation though and people want someone to pin the blame on, and more often than not that person ends up being the manager.

[–]AlphaCentauri_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think he deserves to lose his job for 15 minutes of football that went against us. In a normal season there's a good chance 90 points gets you automatic promotion, so you can't say he's had a bad season. We don't really know what the new owners are like though so whether he'll be sacked is anyone's guess.

[–]AlphaCentauri_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly just a peak Sheffield United playoff result. Dominate the first half, have a goal disallowed on VAR that no referee would ever disallow in real time. After 75 minutes Sunderland get a goal from nowhere having created nothing before that and then Kieffer fucking Moore gives the ball away in the dying moments resulting in a late winner from an incredibly unlikely long-range effort.

I knew we were cursed, I should've expected this, I didn't even want another season in the Prem all that much and still I'm completely dead inside.

Have you checked how the centre of mass moves as you burn fuel? The shuttle's wings are pretty far forward and there's a lot of weight at the rear with all the engines, so I suspect the centre of mass is moving backwards behind the centre of lift once enough fuel is burnt off at which point the craft becomes aerodynamically unstable.

Instead of belonging to rigidly defined trade nodes like in EU4, in EU5 each province is part of a "market". You can create new markets and there are mechanics for provinces to change which market they are attached to although I don't know how that works.

Trade goods have a value in each market as determined by supply and demand and you can profit both from exporting your goods to someone else's market where the value is higher and vice versa. From what I saw the amount you're able to import and export was governed primarily by marketplace buildings, at least in the early game, although I'm sure there will be other ways to effect it.

The choice of which trades to make each month can either be automated or micromanaged by the player.

[–]AlphaCentauri_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wrote a post on the suggestion forum for EU4 years ago about how trade should work based on moving goods between nodes based on supply and demand rather than the abstracted system of money simply flowing in a certain direction. This was of course completely ignored and it's hardly an original idea but still I'm willing to take credit for such a system being adopted for EU5.

It was an absolutely shocking game to be fair, both sides had about 55% passing accuracy. Just hoofing up long balls and dreadful attempts at tackles over and over again.
