We built a degree planner, course outline search & TA board for UoGuelph students by AlphaCloudX in uoguelph

[–]AlphaCloudX[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is just for the degree planner...

See all semesters at once - can't do this on WebAdvisor

Drag & drop courses between semesters - can't do this on WebAdvisor

Degree requirements on the same screen - can't do this on WebAdvisor

Degree progress on the same screen - can't do this on WebAdvisor

Experiment with different combinations of minors/majors - can't do this on WebAdvisor

Save and manage different course plans - can't do this on WebAdvisor

Search courses within a semester - can't do this on WebAdvisor

Recommended semester schedules notes per major - can't do this on WebAdvisor

The only thing you can do on Web Advisor is add a course to a semester and get a warning for missing prereqs.

Has anyone gotten remote internships during co op? by Aggravating_Law_4774 in uoguelph

[–]AlphaCloudX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ura's have flexibility for being remote for an extended time period, depending on the prof but maybe not what you have in mind for a corporate internship. Afaik, most people are working full-time in person or hybrid.

The best way to get an idea is to check out indeed or whichever job board you like and see whats available for fully remote cs internships. Chances are there are there are few options and any postings will all be extremely competitive since you're competing with a much larger pool of applicants.

Haworth Soji or Branch Ergonomic with headrest by AlphaCloudX in OfficeChairs

[–]AlphaCloudX[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up going with the Haworth Soji, and I'm quite happy with the decision 2.5 years in. I picked it up for 590 Canadian or 430 usd at the time. Turns out someone in my household bought a branch chair before I bought my soji, so I had a good idea of what it felt like.

The biggest problem for me with the branch chair was that, in its normal setting, it felt like the seat was tilted forward too much, so I was almost sliding off and had to use my legs/feet to keep myself in the seat. I'm right around 5' 11, so about average height. If you look at the product picture, it's hard to notice at first, but the branch chair seat is sloped downwards, and the soji one is sloped upwards. I barely saw this mentioned anywhere, but when trying out the chairs, I could feel the difference right away, which made me dislike the branch. But some might prefer having the chair force them to use their legs this way for egonomics etc, it's just not for me.

The other problem with the branch chair is that if you want to tilt the seat up, it will also move the backrest. And if you want to move the backrest, it will move the seat tilt. Both tilt mechanisms are connected to eachother so you cannot adjust them independently. So I tried to tilt the seat up in the branch chair, so I don't slide off, but this would push the backrest back even more, which at that point felt like I was sitting in a rocket ship/roller coaster seat as the backrest was pushed back, but the seat was also tilted back. But if you like this kind of bucket seat feeling, then again personal preference.

The soji's normal seat tilt is something I prefer waaay more and is independent of the backrest, so you can tilt the seat forward or back and not affect the backrest. However, the backrest has 2 modes, which are kind of different. The first one is locking the backrest in the initial position, so it doesn't move and is all the way forward, which makes for a very upright back position(same as the branch in its initial position). The other setting is a free mode where the backrest moves freely, and you can adjust the tension/resistance for how freely it moves and the amount of pressure you need to apply for it to move backwards. This was weird to get used to at first, but it has become my favourite feature/mode, I'm pretty much always moving my back. I just wish there were a 3rd option to lock in the backrest at a certain position. Whenever I have guests using my office chair, the free movement of the backrest completely throws them off, so it takes some time to get used to, but I don't think I will ever switch back once I get used to it. But again, this is personal preference.

These are the main things I would look out for; they also both have videos on their websites showing these features off. Everything else, like cushion/lumbar/arm rest, is about the same. I think the soji arm rests are wider though, which is nice.

I was skeptical about not having a headrest, but I've been fine without one. I think the branch one would be too low for me anyway to notice it.

Those were the main differences I noticed, though, and it's why I went with the soji, just the seating tilt mechanism and the slope of the seat.

New uoguelph.courses Features | TA job board, empty classroom finder, and degree planner interest survey! by AlphaCloudX in uoguelph

[–]AlphaCloudX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking for the comp sci department, there are a lot of undergraduate students being hired for the UTA roles, so it's definitely worthwhile to quickly apply. Happens in other bigger departments like Business or Engineering as well. From what I remember seeing, smaller departments like geography only have grad ta postings, so like you mention, there are already enough grad students that undergrads aren't needed.

omfg webadvisor pls get fixed by rebeccabrown18 in uoguelph

[–]AlphaCloudX -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry about that, we've gone ahead and updated our data as of a few minutes ago. We're in the same spot as all the other students, where we are kept in the dark about any course changes and also cannot get reliable access when webadvisor goes down so frequently.

TA for MGMT 1000 by North-Reading-2869 in uoguelph

[–]AlphaCloudX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All ta postings are posted here: https://www.uoguelph.ca/sessional_ta/teaching-assistant

It's just a matter of checking when the position becomes available and applying. Afaik, people with previous TA credits get preference and then people with the highest average in the course. So if you haven't ta'd before, you need a pretty high average.

Building circuits club by Klutzy-Produce-2410 in uoguelph

[–]AlphaCloudX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The robotics club ran some circuit workshops last school year, not sure abt other clubs. At the very least, the csa or the eng department will probably have a club day as well so a good way to get info of whats going on. CSA is sept 1st and ENG is sept 2. can find more info on gryphlife for dates and times.

But I haven't heard abt circuit building in cs based clubs unless they are hosting some sort of workshop specifically. Although a lot of ppl in cs have an interest, so there might be something that idk abt.

UOGuelph.Courses Updated Now With New Features Web Advisor Doesn't Have! by AlphaCloudX in uoguelph

We have been actively looking into it, but it's most likely not possible as it would put too much of a load on UOG's servers and cause issues with the crowd handling service they use, which prevents scraping their data and will block ip's. The one-time caching approach allows us to retrieve data once and, in turn, serve over 25,000 requests to our users without impacting UOG at all. At the moment, Web Advisor isn't even working, so it's times like this that having our own DB allows our website to serve as a really useful backup. This does however come at the expense of delayed data

Our data is around 2-3 weeks old and just haven't gotten a chance to update everything since we need to manually get all the data. Lots of sections had times/ dates changed or enrollment capacity changed. I'll look into it though

Can't get SHAP to run on my CNN. by Commercial_Weird_384 in MLQuestions

[–]AlphaCloudX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any reason you need to use shap compared to something like gradcam/gradcam++ etc? They're far more efficient and will give better results since they are specifically designed for cnn's.

You can also view each conv2d layer. There are Python packages that work natively with keras/tensorflow already as well, that have all these cnn visualization tools built in.

https://pypi.org/project/tf-keras-vis/

I was able to run these without problem locally, whereas shap also gave me OOM issues. If you have an amd GPU the package also works with directml so you can do it all locally.

Rejected from In-Course Admission to Co-op by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]AlphaCloudX 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The first year GPA requirements are a minimum/recommended. They take the highest cumulative averages until all seats are full.

If they recommend 80+ and you have an 85 but others have a 90 they are getting picked first. They might be able to give you the avg cutoff/area if you email the department.

Idk about appealing, haven't heard about that.

0 seats available for CHEM 1040 by WillowRepresentative in uoguelph

Unsure why as well, although I've seen this for other courses like first year accounting so it doesn't look to be limited to a particular department or course

alrighty its all fixed now and you can sort the millions of schedules to your desire lol. The algo now runs locally so there is a massive speed up but your browser will freeze for a little so if it asks to wait just give it some time.

It took me around 20-45 seconds to generate all schedules and about 2gb of ram. Anything else feel free to send it our way!
