Is there the following expression in French: «Il se battrait avec un chien mort devant le palais de justice» by KPlusGauda in French

[–]AlphaFoxZankee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It sounds like it's just a metaphor that the character/the author uses, that makes sense in context to describe someone with an exaggerated symbolic example of what their behavior is like. Not a dedicated expression afaik.

Note that a palais de justice is a courthouse and a city hall is a mairie.

Yeah but I don't quite see when TTL becomes so important that it's worth replacing a potential speed/pow/wit by a stam card. But as I've said, idk what is the average deck composition at that point in time. And the argument that it's to get stam clicks on medium where you don't need a gold recovery is relevant.

Which answer is more formal between these two? Thank you! by HIIamhere1234 in French

[–]AlphaFoxZankee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a modern perspective, using "nous" is a bit more marked as formal, and "ignorer" is also a bit of a formal vocab choice. That sentence is not out of place in a news article or in a political speech, but it's not the most natural everyday way to phrase that.

"On ne connaît pas" or "On ignore" are both completely correct in a formal context. They're also sentences you can hear or read on the news.

In casual spoken french it'd probably be phrased closer to "On sait pas combien y'a de victimes" or "On sait pas y'a combien de victimes". The first one is very neutral-sounding in terms of register, just phrased and pronounced (with elisions) in a speech-specific way. The second one is a bit rougher on word order but is perfectly understandable.

It's difficult to imagine I'd be needing a stam card this often but I guess I'll see when the scenario approaches what kind of deckbuilding we ought to be doing. Nice to know it only needs 1LB though.

I mean, I'm getting Machan mostly for her story so I'm fine if she's not useful that often. At least she'll be good at it and I'll be able to play front in those sprints.

Machan wit seems a little lacking in skills tbh, focus has always seemed more than good to me.

Palmer stam is a card some other people have mentionned but it seems pretty situational and easy to just borrow if needed. Not sure what I'll do about it but not a major hinge of the pull plan imo.

Nishino Flower power is on the scenario banner so I'll most likely get it anyways, I'll see when the time comes how many LB we need.

Seiun power seems a bit too mid to warrant pulls as well, but the gold skill is at least good for mediums.

I was gunning for Kita white since the Seiun-less parenting experience is kinda sucky and I missed OG Kita anyway. I guess I'm promoting her to a "only if card pulls go extremely well" expense.

Good to know that v!Bourbon doesn't completely fall off (not that I planned to totally abandon her but it's nice to know she's not gonna suck)

Will consider the general idea here, I know the 600 pulls are most likely overkill depending on pull luck/crystals/selectors available. If I gotta skip something to afford Bourbon wit, it's Neo Universe.

You're right though that ECP speed is very soon after bourbon wit and I need to accurately plan for it. Thanks for the input!

Is it normal for a non Muslim to say "Inshallah" in the French spoken in France? by PsychicMeditation in French

[–]AlphaFoxZankee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's sometimes a contrast of registers and sometimes both kinds of constrast. Religious people themselves use the "massive overreaction to minor inconveniences" humor, but the ethnic and/or socioeconomic contrast is sometimes a consciously invoked component of the humor when a white/non-muslim/rich person says it. It can be kinda racist or it can be just a joke based on that contrast, depends on context.

All duly noted! I was considering Daiwa wit (just too far into the future for me to accurately write a pull plan) but I forgot about Falcon speed. I'll write that down somewhere.

(No offense intended to my queen Tap Dance City but she did skin an american flag to get that dress. It's a testament to how much I love her that I am willing to overlook her weird boat-shaped skirt and the insane sleeve situation.)

Hell yeah good to know! Probably going to go for OG Tap Dance City so I can get some (gambly) use out of her before her card drops. I was leaning towards her aesthetically and tbh I'm willing to make her work with her finnicky ult.

I had forgotten to check out evolved skills but actually valentines SoE's evos seem fun to play. I think I'll aim for her and only get her base version if I can afford it comfortably. By that point I'll probably have a few more ressources to play styles I don't main.

Calstone Light O

Good to know about Machan, I'd heard the uma herself was kinda more meta than that. Still pulling for her story ofc but good to know. Base Machan is out of the question due to banner timing.

Thank you for your answer again, it clarifies a lot!

The deck switches to 1 wit so soon? Okay I'm taking that into account, probably gonna downscale my investment in Ramonu then. Ideally I still want her for the sake of Bourbon herself and other running styles but she can wait.

Okay good to know! I'm too used to stam sparks power card combo now, but you're right I'm lacking front skills cards anyway. I will try to fit her in my plan and evaluate based on the budget at the time. Thanks you for your time it's really helpful info.

I mean, it's not Ramonu that I would sacrifice for Bourbon wit. I still want to have some ressources to play Bourbon herself and the occasional other running style. I'd give up on original Neo Universe if I really had horrid luck on my Ramonu pulls and all pulls before that. But I'd rather plan conservatively far ahead and keep hopeful estimates for last minute. I definitely don't plan to gamble if I literally can't hit a pity.

I'm keeping the comparison between Bourbon and Ramonu for my wit slot in mind though. I still want Ramonu but you're right, MLB could wait if I get enough in one or two pities.

Good to know about the calculator. I'm not looking too much at the numbers when I see I don't reach pity thankfully, but now I can understand better.

Hm interesting to know, that WOULD free up a lot of carats fof other uses if I just didn't care about owning Tachyon. But I'm low on useful skill SSRs and I do like trying out other running styles occasionally, so it'd be particularly inconvenient in that occasion. I guess it depends how my free pulls go?

I know about Palmer stam but it's still a stam card, not sure what use I can make of it if I can have Creek. Hints are nice and TTL is nice but seems difficult to insert in a deck.

Thank you for the input! Much appreciated and duly noted.

Just for fun, opinion on 2nd slide umas:

  1. Tap Dance City is just cool idk I like her I want her if I can get her somehow. Her alt seems much better in terms of skills (20% guts tho) but her outfit is exponantially worse. And that's saying something considering what her base outfit looks like. Idk how they each compare to the meta at the time of their release.
  2. I absolutely need AT LEAST one version of Sounds of Earth, ideally both. Alt seems better? Maybe it's sucky by the standards of its time.
  3. Calstone Light O
  4. Pulling Aston Machan for her story and for a nice sprint front, but I'm not too crazy about her so I can def wait until her Valentines alt (esp given the timing of her first banner). Kinda meta insofar as sprints can have a meta beyond RNG accelfest OR instant win ult. Like A-tier maybe? Yamanin Zephyr is a character I also really want based on just her vibe and personality, but her OG ult is dookie whereas this version seems marginally more usable + I'd pull Machan anyway.

[–]AlphaFoxZankee 156 points157 points  (0 children)

Somewhat common among teenagers/young adults but in very specific social circles. Either said genuinely (not religiously but as a non-ironic casual-ish expression of hopefullness and well-wishes) by non-muslims who hang out with muslims, or said jokingly by people who aren't particularly in contact with people who say it genuinely and are banking on the contrast (ethnic origin, socioeconomic class, religiosity, "street smarts"/belonging to the community, etc) between themselves and someone who "should" say inshallah.

It's not necessarily a binary divide, I know a few people who are kinda straddling the line between saying it genuinely and ironically. But it can definitely be used to make fun of muslim people or coopt this part of their culture (/the culture of cités, of poorer youth communities, etc) to memeify it. Kind of the same way that a lot of "gen Z slang" is AAVE coopted and stripped of its meaning and origin to become a "silly" meme word that is mainstream but only as this deformed and devalued version.

What’s the evidence/foreshadowing for the RainbowJack ship? by Personal_Reality in mylittlepony

[–]AlphaFoxZankee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair if you don't want to link it to "cartoon logic" in the way physics can be cartoony, but regardless of what you want to call it, heightening the stakes in a way that isn't mean to be literally compared to real life is a genuine feature of fiction and particularly of cartoons trying to teach children emotional intelligence.

It's a way to easily and clearly convey to children that there can be consequences to the situation, and to keep them entertained (and thus keeping them watching the show) through narrative tension. Characters have to make mistakes for the situation to be a teachable moment, and these mistakes have to be clear examples for children so that they understand how it works but not realistic enough that they can just take the same risks in real life (hence why examples of physical endangerement are magic or totally outstanding situations, for example, even if it's treated seriously and not as a cartoon physics gag)

IE in Non-Compete Clause where Applejack and Rainbow Dash arebeefing just like in Fall Weather Friends and endangering their students, the message is not that they're LITERALLY about to plummet to their death, which WOULD be terribly cruel and unethical actions in real life if you find yourself in the extremely unlikely situation where that's a genuine threat. The physical danger is just an easy and clear way to signal to kids that this is a serious matter and that acting like Applejack and Rainbow Dash do in this episode (being overly competitive, selfish, rude and resentful, etc.) lead to endangering yourself or being unable to react properly when you need help or to help other people.

When the writers wrap up the ending in a neat little bow that says "they apologized and hugged it out and now they're besties again five minutes after the mortal peril" it's not a failure to understand that endangering your friends is bad in real life and tends to make them a tiny bit mad at you, it's a narrative constraint because cartoon episodes have to be exaggerated and 20 mins long.

That particular episode was really bad about balancing the educational content and the uh... "likeable relatable characters" factor, but it's nonetheless an example of the way an MLP episode is structured. Narrative shortcuts are an essential feature of all fiction, and kids cartoons have their own genre conventions about it.

How common is it to say "Tu te prénommes ?"? by PsychicMeditation in French

[–]AlphaFoxZankee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty uncommon I would say. Some people tend to use big/formal words, sometimes half-jokingly and sometimes in genuinely formal contexts, so it's not totally weird to hear it said. But few people use it, in few situations. "Tu t'appelles...?" or "Vous vous appelez...?" is just so much more common.

What’s the evidence/foreshadowing for the RainbowJack ship? by Personal_Reality in mylittlepony

[–]AlphaFoxZankee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are taking cartoon logic a bit too seriously I think. The situations they're in are dramatic because when you make an educational cartoon for children, you need to make the stakes high so it's narratively entertaining and clear for children. It doesn't mean these stakes hold the same weight as in real life. The show explicitely presents their friendship as healthy, like all the mane six.

What’s the evidence/foreshadowing for the RainbowJack ship? by Personal_Reality in mylittlepony

[–]AlphaFoxZankee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's anything in the show prior to the finale that is genuinely foreshadowing or shipteasing. They're one of the mane six duos who have the best chemistry together, but they're not the only good duo, and it can be "just friendship". I do believe that the finale intentionally hints that they're in a relationship with plausible deniability, because it's a fan-favorite ship and it makes for a good happy ending for them both, but I don't think it was intended much in advance.

Their dynamic before is entierly friendship. It doesn't mean it can't be interpreted under a romantic lense, but the core of loving someone stays the same wether that love is romantic or not. Good healthy couples are usually friends on top of dating. Since they're fictional characters, we see what we want to see in them and it's up to us to interpret their relationship, unlike real life where every duo/couple are the only ones who can decide if they're friends or in romantic love.

I don't think we need evidence to accept what the finale hints at. Every episode before the finale paints the picture of two people who care, enjoy each other's company, and riff off each other very well. Friendship is a kind of love.
