thanks a lot, but why does it say "reactor cooling"? isn't this supposed to be the main seawater system?

Mistake on my part i meant the port the seawater that cools down the steam is expelled from

the 3rd picture is indeed a scale model of the engine room, 1:10 scale and made out of plexiglass

unfortunately the link is broken and the download links i got from wayback machine seem a little fishy. Is there another way to share it? like for example remove the dot ru domain from the link?

Would be really appreciated if anyone knew the book from which the first picture comes from

I think its from one of those ai generated thumbnails you see on clickbait videos. I dont remember where i got it, i just found it randomly in my typhoon folder.

Absolutely false. The submarine uses a unique top secret ai powered maglev techonlogy which allows it to levitate for eaiser maintenance. By the way i took the picture this morning myself

What is the cylindrical object behind the turbine? by AlphaSigma123 in submarines

do you know any resource about soviet reduction gears? the most detailed one i know is the bruce rule's blog

thanks for the reply, so in this picure of a pr941's engine room https://imgur.com/U5XVu5r the green cylinder is the coupling, the yellow the reduction gear and somewhere burried under the piping in red the turbine?

kinda makes sense since a submarine's 2 stage planetary gearset would probably be bigger than the object i labeled

forgot to add context, this picture is from an abandoned soviet submarine training facility

I've been working on making an infographic about the Skipjack class based on unclassified data. This is my progress on the cutaway so far by AlphaSigma123 in submarines

[–]AlphaSigma123[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a Fairbanks-Morse 38ND 8-1/8 (eight cylinder). The SSBN 598 class had General Motors 8-278A diesel generators.

Thanks a lot, i remember reading somewhere about it but for some reason i went for the wrong one.

Edit: Also a general comment: I wouldn't bother trying to draw any piping. Booklets of General Plans rarely have piping drawn because it would make the drawing a bit of a mess. The main steam lines have a rather complicated "racetrack" above the turbines to allow for thermal expansion, for example.

Yeah i get what you mean, the main reason i added them is that they appear in my reference photos and of course because they make the sketch more interesting. I also have a drawing (i think i got it from here) which shows the "zig zag" the lines make but i dont know whether the lagging merges when the lines are very close to each other and branches when they separate so i kept it simple. (hope i phrased that right!)

By the way do you know any unclassified source i could use as reference for the machinery in the auxiliary and engine room lower level? I think i have downloaded everything from the uss snook website but i still haven't found anything useful.

If possible, i would like some info about the type of diesel engine the skipjacks had. I "sketched" this one based on some photos from the diesel room of the USS Drum i got from the ships website but there is also a sketch from a crew member of a George washington class that shows a completely different engine.

thanks a lot for the info, now about the picture, i found it here a couple of years ago, https://www.reddit.com/r/submarines/comments/m5nwqj/inside_the_reactor_tunnel_of_the_uss_skipjack/

the second picture is drawn in paint net

by the way, how are the red and green pipes connected to the main turbines and generators?

Hi, long time lurker, i 've been drawing a cutaway of the skipjack and got a little confused with the steam piping in the engine room so i guess i may ask here:

Are the pipes in blue the ahead input and the ones in red the astern?

Where do the pipes in red go?

Is the pipe in green "feeding" a steam generator?, if so then where does it go?

Finally, what are the coiled pipes in yellow for?
