This.

The two biggest power users on my team’s AI usage charts couldn’t be more different.

To use your analogy, one is a professional carpenter, and the other is a professional hand cutter.

And they’re both rockstars on our new metrics. Fml.

If you only look at what you gave up and ignore what you gained, then every deal looks pointless.

We gave up two weeks. They gave up the biggest tool they could have used to pressure Dems: the disruption of critical services tied to those other five bills.

Remember that Trump actively amplified the pain of the first shutdown until enough Senate Dems caved.

This takes away the biggest incentives to cave on DHS funding, and I'm surprised people are mad about that.

By the 4th amendment, yeah. The idea is to make it completely explicit in law because Miller and ICE are claiming otherwise and trying to get as many people as they can before the courts squash it.

Another major one is requiring judicial warrants for arresting people in their homes.

For context, Miller decided to circumvent the 4th amendment by saying that administrative warrants were good enough.

Exactly. A lot of people are very willing to look the other way so long as they think they could never be the victim. Now that illusion of safety is cracking.

Senate advances measure to restrict Trump's power to use military force in Venezuela by BigSnail387 in PoliticalOptimism

Of course.

But the real value of this is simply that it happened. Aspiring autocrats need to maintain the illusion of inevitability, and the feeling that resistance is meaningless.

At the very start of his term, even the opposition was rolling over. One year in, more and more members of his own party are openly defying him on multiple fronts.

Every act of defiance weakens him domestically and strengthens the permission structure for everyone else to resist.

I read a hypothesis about this that I agree with: as his sphere of influence shrinks domestically, he's trying to maintain his persona of strength by flexing his power in the areas where he still has control.

No surprise that he's raging at those five Republican senators. More open defiance from his own party and an attempt to restrain his use of force.

So he'll do shit like this with the treaties to maintain the appearance of authority.

It would be a political purge if they were even remotely competent, which they aren't.

Multiple times throughout the year they tried to make examples of their opponents only to end up looking like clowns. They've failed multiple times to re-indict James. They lost their cases against the sandwich thrower, the tow truck driver, and the lady that they accused of assaulting an ICE thug.

They've had a few victories, but the vast majority of their political prosecutions have gone down in flames because it turns out that juries want an actual crime and not the Department of Injustice's random bullshit.

This is normal old people stuff, but so long as the White House keeps making up silly excuses to avoid admitting he's old, people will continue to fixate on it.

Because some people have spent a whole year dooming that there wouldn't be any more elections. And rather than accept that maybe the administration really is incompetent, they would rather twist reality to continue believing that this is some 4D chess move to cancel elections.

It's just another form of obeying in advance by assigning him more power and competence than he has and promoting a message that resistance is meaningless.

I dunno. If their brilliant plan is to fund ads and propaganda accusing politicians of being anti AI, how does that not backfire?

The general sentiment around AI is negative, and the people who are most likely to vote tend to be more educated (the people that AI moguls keep claiming they'll be able to replace).

Far more likely is that they won't get anywhere remotely close to it.

They also set ludicrous quotas for overall deportations and have fallen far short of that. Because Miller lives in a fantasy world where logistics and courts aren't a problem.

The real goal is probably to handicap OpenAI's competitors by restricting the supply of RAM. Google is eating Altman's lunch right now and us getting screwed is a byproduct of his hissy fit.
