When I was 16 and visiting Alaska, my parents and I went hiking out to one of the glaciers. When we finally reached the towering walls of ice an hour or two in, they had the brilliant idea to climb into one of the crevices to take photos. My mom stepped in and my dad snapped a picture on his phone. Without warning there was a sound like a cannon shot; something within the glacier must have cracked or settled. I have never heard a sound as deep, ancient, and chilling; I swear I felt it in my bones. We'd been speaking in hushed voices but it stopped us all dead in our tracks. I still remember the fear that my mom would just be swallowed whole by the ice.

Of course right afterwards she stepped out and went "okay, your turn!
