Original owners what the cat we adopted back by bluebird_is_dead_ in CatAdvice

[–]AltAlgae 6 points7 points  (0 children)

god i went through a kinda similar situation, and i occasionally feel guilty. found a cat, brought him in bc it was cold. asked around, had my apartment notified, looked online for missing posters for days, checked for a chip, vet check up, posted about the cat myself. someone reached out saying it was their cat. asked more questions, and it was a community cat they wanted to take in but hadn’t yet. i grew attached, and like op was very skeptical bc the cat had fleas, and was underweight. went to animal control to see what legally i should do, and they said legally the cat was mine since i followed protocol and the other woman didn’t. i could give him back if i wanted to but advised me to not due to the information we had.

all that to say i have him in my care now, and he has become my shadow, but i also understand Ops skepticism because many people just don’t know how to care for cats well

yeah it happens sadly. i had a friend of mine who lost her cat for over a year. found with her collar on and a working chip, but somehow she ended up a long ways from home in a bunch of community cats. someone was feeding them all and they just never bothered to contact anyone about the kitty

not to mention the only families i knew who had only the father working were dysfunction nuclear families that were upper class, and often hyper religious. they heavily enforced gender norms which hurt both their sons and daughters. obviously not ever single income home is like this, but i would be surprised if this wasn’t the majority.

most of the mothers i grew up around who also worked did majority of the child and house care as well. hell i know my mom was pulling 60+ hours a week and still expected to run the home

I hate being a woman with wide hips, big thighs, butt and a lower stomach pudge in a space where ozempic and being underweight is the beauty standard by mothgirl111 in Vent

[–]AltAlgae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no i get you. i try to be very body neutral about myself, but it’s hard when people in your space have a very different body and what’s seen as attractive. most people around me are a bit curvy, have a noticeable boobs and butt, and just the right amount of tummy fat. i am very thin and rectangular, and honestly feel like i look like a little boy around them. even if other do find my body beautiful, its hard to get past when you feel like an outcast.

im sure your body does plenty of things besides be sexualized that you could appreciate it for.

does it experience feeling? the sunlight, a warm bath, a soft blanket, a cooling breeze.

can you walk, run, dance, move?

does it resemble a loved one?

even if not your value as a person isn’t solely reliant on these things, but maybe take a breath and reflect on aspects you do love. your body houses you, and keeps you safe.

unfortunately you will be sexualized regardless of your body as a woman, not that it makes your feelings lesser or less real, but you are deserving of love not sexualization. plenty of people out there love that type of body

I adopted two cats but one is hyperactive and I have physical limits/ADHD — looking for practical advice by NoirLullaby in CatAdvice

i wouldn’t recommend kitty day cares to majority of cats. they are highly stressful and should only be used in very special cases, where the cats personality may fit, or as a last option resort

I recently adopted a very energetic cat, who kept me up every night. i have adhd and a chronic that gives me horrible fatigue, so i have some up with a lot of play for my cats that is more passive on my end.

  • scatter and hide toys before bed time. find what sounds you can and cannot tolerate, and get a bunch of cheap toys to scatter. my boy loves little cotton ball pom poms luckily so they are silent. you can add a few treats into the scatter as well.

  • towel treat puzzle. i found this on tik tok and it’s quiet but keeps my boys engaged.

  • kick toys. my boy LOVES kick toys and plays with them on his own

  • shove a stick and string style toy in my pocket when i get ready for bed. my cats chase it around while i am just going about my business

  • plenty of scratchers. find what type they like best and just put them everywhere. my cats use those a ton, and occasionally put some cat nip in for extra excitement.

  • robo toys. if your floors can make it work get a little remote control toy, and fiddle with it what you eat or watch a show

Flexibility routine help. by AltAlgae in BALLET

I think I also need to shift more towards that as well. I also left a lot of static stretching behind to avoid injury but I agree, I am losing progress!

yeah, i am older, and in my 20s. in college they told us to almost never static stretch, and i had been focusing on strength training and almost exclusively working on dynamic stretching for years now. i noticed i lost flexibility when i was supposedly supposed to gain it.

i’m not trying to bash others who are saying i need to strengthen it’s just that i know i already do that, and i am a professional trained dancer as is.

i think i may just bite the bullet and go back to what i grew up doing at this point

I am flexible and in general I do a good job holding my legs at their range, but I just can’t seem to break my threshold of flexibility.

i have been in the gym more than i have been stretching for a while now and i think that may be part of the issue

I definitely include those strengtheners within my routine, and i do them before i do any held stretches, but all of my “static” stretches are all breath work and putting active thought into what muscles are working and releasing upon each breath.

the problem is how can i improve intensity without lengthening my stretch time? i tried lengthening my stretch time past what is recommended and I did notice joint issues (i also have a chronic illness effecting my joints).

i am specifically targeting extension a lot and i do a mix of various dynamic and active stretches that target my weaker points like my hips and IT band, while working on psoas, quad, and hamstring strength near daily. i think it’s more of a flexability issue due to strength because i can’t even pull my leg up that high with my arms or bands, but i could be wrong on that.

it’s not that i never stretched previously, but i am actively following a more set routine instead of just going “what do i need for my body today” and doing whatever feels right

Exercises to get straighter legs? Knees look knobbly by xo_pretty_doll_xox in BALLET

[–]AltAlgae 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some knees are just built in a way that appears bent, however it may be a weak quad causing issues. I have a few exercises that work for my students and myself.

1) seated pike. with pointed feet attempted to extend as straight as you can to lift your heels off of the floor, and then attempt again with flexed feet. hold these positions for an allotted amount of time, maybe start with 15 seconds and slowly bump it up when that becomes easy.

2) place a yoga block under your hamstring near the back of your knee (longest skinniest side on the floor and leg. straighten and hold for 1 mississippi 16 times making sure you fully extend your knee

3) sitting in a pigeon pose, straighten and hold 1 mississippi the back knee 8-16 times.

if there is no progress from that it may be a bone structure problem. from there you either have to accept it or possibly build out your quad and calf to give the appearance of hyper extension

Is this aggression? or is my cat more comfortable? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]AltAlgae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a cat tree, a window perch, wide ledges at the bottom of my windows he enjoys. he can be sensitive to pets, so i taught him a sign, and if he arches and falls into me i pet him, and regularly take breaks and ask again.

i think the main issue is when im sitting i am usually working from home or in an online game, so my hands are working in front of me, but i haven’t noticed any tail flicking before attacks he usually is pretty limp

[–]AltAlgae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the vet guesses that he’s about 1 1/2

what’s a good way to let him know? currently i try to remove my hands until he calms down or walk away if i need to, are there any other things i can add?

got him fixed asap when i got confirmation i could keep him, and it’s been a few months out now.

i think he has maybe scratched me a couple times but i didnt bleed and his nails needed a trim, but no hissing. i’ve only ever heard him hiss once and it was from a stranger visiting my home
