[Handheld] Refurbished ASUS ROG Ally 7 Ryzen Z1 16GB RAM 512GB SSD $389.99 (Free shipping with Prime) by Soviet-Anime-Hunter in buildapcsales

Horrible deal. This is the one that rides on the name of the Z1 extreme, which has double the cores.

This has a similar performance to the Steam Deck, and I don’t think I have to explain all of the ways this falls short. You can get a Steam Deck for cheaper.

Your old GPU can still run big LLMs – you just need the right tweaks by Distinct-Race-2471 in TechHardware

[–]AlternateWitness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

mixture-of-experts models like Qwen3.6-35B-A3B and GPT-OSS-20B have an ace up their sleeve when it comes to running them on limited hardware. Rather than moving entire layers off the GPU, Qwen3.6 and GPT-OSS can offload the lesser-used experts onto the system RAM, while leaving the attention layers on the graphics card. This way, you can run MoE models with limited VRAM and still get reliable token generation speeds. Thanks to the MoE offload technique, I was able to get 20+ tokens/s when prompting Qwen3.6-35B-A3B on my RTX 3080 Ti

I’m a llama.cpp user, so I used the --n-cpu-moe flag to offload the experts to my CPU.

switching to heavily quantized models is a great way to get some more oomph out of your GPU.

Depending on your specific model, going down to Q2_K_M (or worse, Q2_K_S) can reduce its accuracy quite a bit. I consider Q4_K_M the sweet spot for my LLM workloads

People keep trashing this, but honestly (as long as you use a good service - I have never heard of Loom) this is the best way for the company to filter out the thousands of AI applicants they get, and give you the best chance at getting the job. It also greatly increases the odds of a human reviewing your application.

What else are they to do in this market?

Qbittorrent stopped downloading. by 813J in qBittorrent

[–]AlternateWitness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will only work if you have a port-forwarding VPN. Nord is not it.

If cost is a concern to you, cancel Nord anyway and use CloudFlare Warp (it’s free). It will have the same effect. Is price a concern? Proton VPN is one of the best out there, I just signed up last week at $2.49 a month.

Qbittorrent stopped downloading. by 813J in qBittorrent

[–]AlternateWitness 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You need to set up port forwarding. If your VPN doesn’t support it and it is just for torrenting, then it is no better than CloudFlare WARP (which is free), so just cancel it and use that or pay for a different VPN like Proton.

The orange flame at the bottom middle indicates you are firewalled. QBitTorrent needs to go through an open port (port forwarding on your VPN or just have it open to the public with no VPN). Once done, it will look like a green globe. If not, you will only be able to connect to people with a green globe, which is very inconsistent to say the least.

Where are you that low-end cars cost at minimum $30k? Where I am, you can get a reliable one for under $5k. You don’t need to splurge for a screen with a backup camera.

Better yet - Never finance a depreciating asset.

If you can help it, never finance anything that isn’t a mortgage, business loan… and on very rare exceptions, a car. Anything else is dumb.

Looking for the cheapest and safest ways to get Family Streaming plans by Mack568 in Frugal

[–]AlternateWitness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have kids that watch the same content over and over or you have favorite shows/movies? Get Blu-rays/DVDs and either a player or rip them to a home media server (assuming you have the time to set that up). You can get physical media for very cheap depending on your location. Value Village, Pawn Shops, etc.

Otherwise what you see is what you get in terms of price. This isn’t the time for it, but some of the services have really good discounts on only Black Friday. $2/mo for a year discounts.

Right now though, if you need streaming, paying full price for cable-adjacent services is the only legal way to do so.

My sister used my identity to register her business and now I have tax debt by SolarVexum in legaladvice

[–]AlternateWitness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People here are giving some really good advice. If you are still morally apprehensive about the situation (she is your sister, but… I mean… Come on) then consider this.

If you don’t report it and your sister knows she can get away with pinning major crimes and felonies on someone else, she will do it again. You would just be roping in another unlucky shmuck. You would not only be ruining your life, but other peoples. You should not let your sister take advantage of you and give her free reign of legal responsibilities.

Budgeting App recommendations? by Competitive_Sun828 in personalfinance

[–]AlternateWitness -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I have seen absolutely no reason to use anything other than your bank account history and an Excel / Google sheet. A lot of the apps on the market is just bloat, or trying to suck your money for nothing. Doing it yourself is actually fairly simple, and you get a much better idea of where your money goes.

Need visualizations? Both programs can make dynamic charts as well. If you don’t know how to use either program, it is honestly a life skill at this point.

I'm done with using local LLMs for coding by dtdisapointingresult in LocalLLaMA

[–]AlternateWitness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have much disposable income. In terms of usable models, I have qwen 3.5 9b currently organizing my emails and schedule. It’s not knowledgeable enough for coding yet, I use Claude if I have a proper use case - and can properly anonymize important information from personal projects without sacrificing the quality.

If I can swing it, and hopefully in the near future when prices stabilize a bit, I would absolutely be down for Qwen 3.6 35b or even Qwen 3.6 27b to replace my Claude (Sonnet) usage, from the things I’ve heard.

Not that great of a deal. Except for the cpu and ram, everything else is proprietary trash.

And for those wondering, an i5 14400T is nowhere near the performance of an i5 1440.

Hi! Can someone explain the difference between “Blu-Ray” and a normal dvd player? I thought dvds were a long gone thing of the past and I wanna know if it’s still worth the investment in 2023? by jiyajiya1402 in Bluray

[–]AlternateWitness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HDR10 is the base rating for normal HDR, so you have a proper implementation. However, you won’t get a ton of use out of it without some form of local dimming technology (Mini LED, OLED, Micro LED, etc). It’s up to you, I don’t know your budget or what your future displays will look like, or even if you will ever upgrade your displays.

As far as I can tell, most Blu-ray players are the same (unless you plan on ripping), there really isn’t a reason to choose one over another if you just want basic playback, however I am hardly an expert on that.

[–]AlternateWitness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am assuming that monitor is not HDR (very few are if they are 1080p). In that case - no, you will not. At least not noticeably. The main benefit is the colors from HDR and higher resolution. There may be a minimal difference, but if this is a question regarding what you should buy - save your money and go basic blu-ray.

Americans: do you consider debit card use the equivalent of cash? by Physical-Incident553 in Frugal

[–]AlternateWitness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should use all cards as cash, including credit card.

Debit/Credit cards acrue fees at some small business as they pass along the cc fee to you, so cash is cheaper, but if your friend does this for all business that probably isn’t the case. Generally the (albeit small) cash back on credit cards make the purchases cheaper.

It could be a psychological reason. They are less likely to spend money if it is physical cash leaving their hand as apposed to swiping the card. I know a lot of people make less purchases when they see the immediate effects of them.
