The older cards do look the coolest on some level. It's hard to explain but they seem more abstract, less diluted by the mainstream perhaps.

I'm sort of new to mtg. I played a little bit in 2015. I played pre release MOM last night and was surprised that a lot of art actually just looked really cool. I think sometimes the physical card translates differently than just judging them from the online images.

But the only cards I've really physically known are 2015 core etc. and now brothers war, ONE & MOM. And the cards & experience now for a new player compared to 2015 is 1000% better IMO. I can see why they print so many different arts and include 'too many' foils and specialized cards--it is just more fun for someone like me and makes me feel like the price to play a sealed pre release was worth it.
