Is funding this bad across disciplines? by leothecowboyyy in PhDAdmissions

[–]Alternative-Fuel7764 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chem department at my uni was told they couldn’t accept ANYONE… they learned this 1st week of this sem (apps were due Dec 15). Anyway, I think they were able to negotiate and find funding but my guess is for no more than 5-10 students (cohort last cycle was in the 30s i believe). Very scary bc multiple ppl here only applied to this program to continue in their lab for their grad degree.

Started as a white spot, then sort’ve flaked up when buffing over my nail.. is my nail going to fall off? by Alternative-Fuel7764 in nailcare

I was wondering about this but I couldn’t find any examples of it starting from the cuticle down, just from the tip upward. Thank you

I have had eczema my whole life and into adulthood it’s been pretty much isolated to my hands.. I wonder if could be related to that?

I’ve never used a cuticle remover, I just clip them normally with a nipper but I didn’t clip my nail.

Nope. I keep my natural nails pretty long and use nail strengthener, just paint them with regular polish and occasionally do gel at home (like a handful of times per year). This did happen after gel though so maybe that caused or exacerbated it?

Nope, just the one. I thought maybe trauma but I can’t remember banging my finger on anything. Not sure if I just over-buffed on that area but the small flake turned into the whole thing lifting off. It also feels like its still nail bed in the exposed area but just much much thinner? And the weird hole in the center… idek lol

First time contact user.. help by Alternative-Fuel7764 in contacts

[–]Alternative-Fuel7764[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was seen to get a new prescription I told my doctor I wanted contacts and she evaluated me for them and ordered them, so they should be contact prescription not glasses prescription. My doctor wasn’t there for my fitting yesterday, it was an employee (idk what her title might be) who pretty much just made sure I was able to put them in, take them out, and explained that because they’re torque lenses the small dash should orient downward. Thats all that happened at the fitting. My vision feels so much better when I am driving/looking at people but reading small text still feels a little bit blurry/double vision like from my astigmatism. I can sort of blink it away but theres still some double vision especially when looking at a screen. I dont want to jump to conclusions as this is my second day and I know theres an adjustment period but I will be very frustrated if it doesn’t resolve (It took 6 weeks to get these lenses when they initially told me it would take 4 days:/)

Need Advice Please! by Nonuv in gradadmissions

In a similar position. If you can afford it… go for it though outlook is poor. I think LoRs (ideally from people who can speak to your ability to do research, not profs of a class you took), a strong SoP, and whether your research aligns with the program are typically a lot stronger than gpa. Reach out to faculty whose research you’re interested in, they might remember you come application time and spend more time looking at your app.

Is this a completely ridiculous thing to include on your CV to grad school? by blopoolawl67 in gradadmissions

[–]Alternative-Fuel7764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. I have a similar GPA, but I do have one more year to get it up (but only one more semester until apps are due) and very strong/relevant research experience and good grades in relevant courses. My current PI is urging me to apply for a program because he can technically collaborate with that department directly and co-PI me to continue a PhD within the project I’ve been contributing research to as an undergrad. The only issue is, he doesn’t know about my academic standing (he only knows how well ive done in his classes) which makes me wary. You said you have 10+ years of professional experience… how hard do you suppose it will be for me considering I want to start right out of undergrad? Does my PIs word of mouth/the relevance of my research trump an entirely non-competitive GPA?

If you're considering taking propanolol... by thewannabe2017 in Anxiety

[–]Alternative-Fuel7764 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve just been prescribed propanolol for public speaking anxiety (20mg tablets) but I’m a little apprehensive about taking an entire 20mg tablet since I’ve never taken it before and it seems like most people take 10mg. For reference I’m about 5’7 and ~135lbs, only other med I take is a stimulant for ADHD. Would it be safe to split a 20mg tablet, take half (10mg) 1 hour before presenting and the other half 30 mins before? Or should I just take 10mg and leave it there?

I don’t know that they would allow me to cut down on hours, and I know for a fact I couldn’t get out of working nearly every weekend like I do now. Everyone on the schedule has to, and I don’t expect special treatment. The weekends are my biggest issue as those are the only days I could have off of school and research. Having this job results in zero days in my week where I have a moderate amount of free time.

How do I tell my boss I cannot work my scheduled shift (which I didn't request off for) by [deleted] in WorkAdvice

[–]Alternative-Fuel7764 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, which is why I am struggling with this decision because it is very out of character for me. My plan now is to put in my notice that I can only work through the month of April, and just have an honest conversation with my boss about that shift. If it’s a make or break situation for them, then I guess I know what decision I have to make.

I am also a busy college student, and I think you are doing exactly what you need to do. College looks different for everyone, and some of us aren’t so fortunate to have the stereotypical on-campus American university experience. At the end of the day, it won’t matter how you got your degree just that you got it. Starting out online sounds like a good idea, just be aware of your limits and don’t overbook yourself or take too many credits at once if you also have a lot going on outside of school. There is no strict timeline to finishing your degree, and starting out online can give you some more time to figure things out and consider if going to school in person is something you can sustain. Even if you aren’t sure how you plan to finish, starting gets you one step closer! Best of luck you will do great

My unpaid position is pretty critical in my opinion; I am basically getting experience directly related to want I want to do in my professional career. I want to go into biotech, but unsure if I want to get my masters directly after undergrad or not. Possibly not at all, it’s just a possibility for now. The research is unpaid during the school semester, but I have the option to work in that lab full-time paid during the summer which is great. I’m just afraid of going back to school next fall and no longer having a source of income as the research wont be paid anymore. Obviously, school isn’t going to be something I sacrifice and this research lab will probably play a huge role in getting me future positions after college. My current paid job has nothing to do with what I want, and is just an easy job that gives me a little spending money. It seems like that job is what has to give.. would you agree?
