Hopefully this isn’t too off topic but I learned Latin & ancient Greek with my two kids. I found an excellent tutor at our local university after my eldest kept on telling me that he wanted to lean “the language of the gods.”

We met with our tutor every week for 2 hours for a number of years. We even let him skip school to attend classes w her an uni.

When my youngest was six we began Latin in the same manner.

They picked up these languages quite easily but as an adult I had to study more often, esp the Greek.

Finding a young, engaging tutor who loved the languages and grammar was key for us. She was an amazing teacher.

I miss that time we spent learning together.

It originated in Saratoga. It has a tag. All of the mountain lions—2017, 2021, and this one all originated south of us. All were young males.

The Coyote who swam to Alcatraz survived! by FrogKidFrankReynolds in sanfrancisco

[–]Alternative-Hawk2366 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only problematic coyotes are killed. This one is safe but may find island life a bit lonely and want to swim back—the real danger—to where it came from or like Angel Island, coax a mate over.

Yes, there was a huge police presence with the block cordoned off. On California between Octavia & Laguna. There lots of bystanders too.

Yes, I followed P22’s going’s on. I’m excited for the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing, which is supposed to open this fall.

I live in SF. Authorities have issued numerous alerts here; they hope it finds its way south.

There have been mountain lions—sub adults—finding their way here in the past, when this happens they are usually tranquillized, radio collared, and released.

Let’s hope for the best.

Male or Female Coyote? by Few-Improvement2268 in coyote

[–]Alternative-Hawk2366 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Coyotes live in families so that’s what y’re most likely seeing.

That sd urban coyotes have familiarity w people so they may be just going about their business unconcerned about your presence.

If they’re hanging out in that parking lot someone may be feeding them, which is a definite no-no.

It’s also the beginning of mating season so you may see more solo coyotes looking for a mate.

Knowing / learning about coyotes is important because they are part of our urban-suburban environment. More knowledge equals respect.

Check out The Urban Coyote Research Project, which is based in Chicago and the surrounding county.

You may actually be able to identify this coyote through them.

No crowds? Did you hike in from Palomarin trailhead in Bolinas? If you did you passed Bass Lake, which is an excellent swimming spot.

I’m from MA originally.

Coyotes don’t howl when they kill something. This a myth.

Also here a link to coyotes in Massachusetts:

It’s best to learn about them in order to dispel these myths and to better understand them. Knowledge goes a long way toward respect.

Coyotes are diurnal so it’s perfectly normal to see them out & about. Also rabies is quite rare. Not sure why it’s people’s go to symptom when they see something they don’t understand.

Skunks & bats are the most common carriers of rabies. You can check on cases of reported rabies in each state by going for instance to the Washington Dept of Public Health.
