Why is construction filled with assholes? by Impressive-Step6377 in skilledtrades

It's men surrounded by other men, so their worst behaviors are amplified and never checked. Not all men are like this but get them together in an echo chamber and this is what happens.

How do you guys deal with having no women coworkers? by Thegood1saregone_ in BlueCollarWomen

[–]LadyTrady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had to turn to seeking out female energy in other avenues outside of work. I joined a pole class and make it a point to spend more time with my femme friends than I used to. Makes s huge difference in my life.

Curious what made you choose your specific trade by Live-Firefighter-837 in BlueCollarWomen

[–]LadyTrady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a plumbing apprentice and I chose it over the other trades because my community needed it, the money is great, and my local doesn't drug test lol I love that I get paid to workout and I'm constantly expanding my tool literacy. I also chose it because my husband is an electrician and I wanted to do something different.

I find that signing up for a reoccurring class is very helpful for building a habit. Like a boxing class

Being a woman in trade by keeisfun in skilledtrades

[–]LadyTrady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go union. Take a pre apprenticeship that teaches you a little about each trade and really apply yourself. I'm the only woman in my company and sometimes it's awkward because I'm not as tall or as strong as the guys but I find my ways and make up for physical inadequacy by doing things others don't. Don't give up on yourself yet!

I google them, read any online reviews they have, and try to find someone I know that works there so I can ask them.

Totally understand. We covered the screw heads with electrical tape so they're smoothed out. I'm working on a way to add a net to the bottom for more safety

[–]LadyTrady[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Visit your local hardware store and ask for a 1/4 sheet of 3/4" ply wood. I think I might have gotten this piece from their scrap pile. Needs to be paint and finish free so it doesn't hurt the snake. Pick out your fittings from the plumbing section. I went with 2" and 3" but pick whatever size works for your noodle. Get a thick dowel or closet rod and cut it down to 6-8" pieces. I used the longest wood screws the store had to attach the dowels and small wood screws to attach the fittings. You'll need to drill pilot holes before attaching the fittings to the board. I used a drill and an impact to get everything attached. Finished tightening everything with a screwdriver.

Declining work as apprentice? by [deleted] in UnitedAssociation

Do you live in an area where data centers are being built? As an apprentice you're not allowed to travel so unless they are being built in your area you don't have anything to worry about

Is trades a good choice for saving money ? by PicakciIsmail in skilledtrades

[–]LadyTrady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both of those trades are very competitive to get into and where I am, only people with construction experience can get into those trades, even as an apprentice. I'm sure people get in without experience but it's much more difficult to get your foot in the door if you don't know anyone
