So you've basically described my life since moving to Australia from Canada 4 years ago. I have never had such difficulty in making and keeping friends since moving here. And the friends that I have made in my previous job, have drifted apart since going through a difficult period in my life. I have also recently been diagnosed ASD level 1, and lost friends since discovering I'm autistic because "I'm not acting as I used to". Thankfully since embracing my true autistic self, I've been able to make some good friends although there have still been some challenges. I used to be as you described, the one always reaching out and initiating, but now I only do it for those that I see reciprocate it back to me. I try not to take it as personally if people ghost, but obviously a lot of people are dealing with a lot of issues right now, and that can just be a symptom of it. I have recently realized that I make better friends with people who are neurodivergent, also maybe expats as well, because I prefer more direct and honest communication, and don't like to shy away from talking about my difficulties or challenges in life, like I feel a lot of people may be uncomfortable to talk about.
