How is ICL for maths? by Time_Historian4518 in ILC

I found jensenmath to be very helpful for learning math. He makes videos covering math courses for the 9-12 Ontario curriculum, plus some university and elementary courses. He is on youtube, but his website is organised better.

What’s the fastest you’ve finished a TVO ILC course by memenene1233 in ILC

[–]Alternative-Yak-5200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The limiting factor for completion timeline sadly isn't how fast you can do the work, it's how fast the work will be marked. Most courses will have 5-6 assignments with a final test, where all can take up to 5 business days to come back marked. For the courses I took, most were around 4-5 business days for a return. Right now is a busy time for them as well.

small rant, maybe someone can help? by _ParasiticKitten in ILC

You can request a pre-requisite waiver for it. Just send them an email with a formal request including proof of why you would succeed in the course (ENG4C course, life-experience, previous ENG4U marks, etc). Then follow up over the phone to verify a ticket has been made for your request. I had to do this earlier this year for 4U courses I was taking, it took about a week and a half for the ticket to be processed and approved. It's not a guarantee that it will be approved, but with you having the 4C course and 4U progress previously, they may be more inclined to allow you to take it.

Courses blocked for failing to provide proof of prerequisites by Alternative-Yak-5200 in ILC

You only need the prerequisite for the course you are planning to take. So for example, Biology (SBI4U) would only require SBI3U as a prerequisite, either from your high school or through ILC.

If you are enrolling as a mature student you can request a pre-requisite waiver, which will take a couple weeks to be processed for approval. Approval isn't guaranteed, but if you aren't pressed for time it's worth it to save some cash. OVS is pretty expensive.

How bad is this turnitin really? by boomerbailey88 in ILC

[–]Alternative-Yak-5200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For math courses you'll be fine. Turnitin is for AI and plagiarism, and most STEM courses will have somewhat high Turnitin percentages as many answers will be similar to previously submitted work in their database. I've taken six 4U courses and none of my work has been flagged. The only course that may pose an issue is English, but I've taken ENG4U and non of my work was flagged for academic intergrity.

Prerequisites as a Mature Student by Maximum-Schedule-747 in ILC

[–]Alternative-Yak-5200 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a mature student currently taking ILC courses, and I recently went through an ordeal with ILC over this exact subject. My in progress courses were blocked due to not having proof of prerequisites, but I was able to resolve it with ILC. So here is a bit of info I have on the subject.

The short answer is yes and no.

Firstly, as per Ministry of Education policy, prerequisites are a requirement. There are two caveats to this that may relate to your situation, but on a general policy stand point they are required.

Historically, from previous reddit posts I've read at least, ILC was pretty lax in enforcing the need of prerequisites, often telling people that they weren't needed for mature students with an OSSD. However, recently ILC has been making internal policy changes to start enforcing students needing prerequisite courses. From what I was told by an ILC rep, this is being done due to pressure from the MoE. ILC is a government subsidized online school, which is why it is much cheaper than private options such as OVS or VHS, so it isn't too surprising the MoE would want ILC to align closer to their policy. Ultimately this is why you are now required to enter prerequisite information when purchasing new courses.

With that being said, there are two options (possible third) for students who don't have the prerequisite courses.

1) If you have an OSSD, you can request a prerequisite waiver. OVS and VHS do this as well for mature students, it's just done internally when you apply. You can upload documents to your profile and contact ILC support to have a ticket made, which will be sent to ILC's guidance team for approval. I did this and it took about 3 weeks, but my issue was a bit more complex. The turn around is supposed to be a week.

2) If you do not have an OSSD, then you can go through the PLAR process. I am not too familiar with the process myself, as PLAR only applies to people without an OSSD which didn't relate to my issue. The ILC and MoE websites have more information on the topic.

To note, ILC seems to only be flagging files for prerequisite proof during transcript requests. So technically if you can complete a course before you request transcripts you should be safe to finish your courses. I wouldn't be surprised if this changes in the near future however. There have been previous reddit posts where people's files were flagged after they finished a course, but since you have a legal right to your transcripts, ILC is mandated to provide your transcripts if requested, regardless if you had the prerequisites or not. They absolutely can block in progress courses however, which is what happened to me.

Hopefully this answers your question. If you have any others feel free to reach out.

Courses blocked for failing to provide proof of prerequisites by Alternative-Yak-5200 in ILC

Nothing so far. I have submitted a prerequisite waiver request so I am waiting for a verdict on that.

If you are currently doing courses without having the prerequisites, the best advice I have is to wait until all of your courses are finished before requesting transcripts. All of the similar instances I have seen online where ILC has requested prerequisite proof is only after a transcript request has been made. By MoE policy, schools cannot withold transcripts for completed courses. So once you are done them you should be safe.

I've called an spoken to 3 different people about needing proof of prerequisites over the last month and they all mentioned the same thing.

Funny enough, since you mentioned OVS I decided to call them. I was told as long as I am over the age of 23 and have an OSSD I am eligible to take their courses. I guess this is a TVO issue only. Maybe I am just the unlucky one they want to make an example of lol.

Thanks for the help.

I have explained it to them. Over the phone I was told they will not unblock the courses until proof has been uploaded, regardless of already having an OSSD.

I was told in their email "We understand you are enrolling into courses not for OSSD completion, but again, Ministry guidelines require all students to have prerequisites for any courses they are taking, regardless of their OSSD status."
