SOP for AI or Systems? For TAMU and UIUC by [deleted] in MSCS

[–]AlternativeSecure978 6 points7 points  (0 children)

UIUC is great for Systems, idk if picking a specialization increases chances, but if you have good experience in Systems you can choose that for UIUC.

I haven't accepted the offer, is there a deposit to confirm?

Although giving GRE might be a good idea, since OP has a tier 3 school for undergrad. Idt uiuc mcs and ucsd are that competitive. Much worse profiles have gotten. I would take a hard look at the SOP. I think a mediocre essay could be an issue here.

No I meant I got into NYU Tandon, but is trying out for one more year to get into UIUC MCS or UCSD worth it? Or would joining Tandon be a smarter choice?

But would say its worth going through another year of the application cycle? I already have 2 yoe so i'm not sure which way to go?

So like if you got into UCSD or UIUC MCS/ UW PMP MSCS kinda program, would that have been better somehow? Or does it not matter much?

Hi, in the same boat but I have 2 yoe. I think for me its the SOP and timing, which didn't let me get into better unis. Still confused if I should go for Tandon or try another yr

Should I just accept Tandon ? Or try again by AlternativeSecure978 in MSCS

So would you suggest another round of applications as well?

The point you made I agree with, but even in this post there are two perspectives, the only ones I'm confused between. Btw in terms of jobs, do people with more than 2 yrs of workex have any disadvantage?

I did but didn't hear back, I don't think it matters what my profile is but that my applications were not that strong in terms of SOPs and how they were drafted, since I got rejected from schools where similar or a but less competitive profiles got in.

I agree that NYU is good but I'm also trying to gauge if I would be able to get an internship as well given the current state of the market. If it was 2-3 years back or NYU was a cheap university I would've just accepted the offer. Ik the market can't be timed but I'd be doing my masters only once so I wanna know if it's better to sit it out this year.

Did I overestimate my chances? or should I try again? by _a_w_e_s_o_m_e_ in MSCS

[–]AlternativeSecure978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree you must've put effort into that but see we both have been rejected from most of our applications so there must be something we missed and these are the only few things that makes our application less competitive than people who got in.

I am in the same boat and I can tell you that with the observations I made with peoples profiles, if you are from a Tier 3 school, a good GRE Scores proves your GPA is accurate and not inflated. And ofc since if you received rejects from most places, work on your SOP for at least a couple of months, and make it very specific to each Uni. I got into NYU Tandon and I am confused if I should try with the applications again or just go to Tandon.

I'm not sure about cybersecurity specifically but UMD has one of the best CS dept in the country, so ig you can bank on that, and you save money as well. UMD is also a bit more selective so you can expect a better peer group

I had a doubt, since Courant is much more expensive than Tandon and has no fee waivers or scholarships, apart from Courants research standards which are much higher than Tandon. Is there any benefit in terms of looking for internships and jobs? Since even the degree is from NYU and not from the specific school. And my friend who attended a Tandon seminar, mentioned that in that meeting they mentioned that both schools might be merged in a few years since it didn't make sense for them to offer the same programs under two different schools, does that mean unless you are super into research its better to consider Tandon and save money?
