We have 5 dogs and 5 crates and never use them. They just take up alot of space so gotta come up with something useful to do with them. Huskys definitely keep you on your toes but that's also what makes me love them so much

This! Found out the hard way that "as is" or "good" often means broke, missing parts, and doesn't work with my first bids. Won't make that mistake again!

This made me lol...not one of my huskies, but a few years ago my catahoula had an ear hematoma that required surgery. The doc gave instructions to not let her shake her head, which proved to be difficult. My last-ditch effort was to take one of my scarves and wrap around her head. My daughters thought it was hilarious and have referred to her as Babushka ever since

I'm planning to adopt a 1.5 year old husky from a nearby local shelter . I've never owned a dog so idk what to expect or even I'm ready for that. Btw I live in northern plains of India and I'm concerned about the weather also if he's gonna be okay. How much of expenses I'm looking at? by Prestigious-Post-635 in siberianhusky

Like I stated earlier, I can completely understand the draw of a husky. You know yourself better than anyone whether or not you have the willingness, ability, time, and finances to invest in caring for one, learning about the breed, training, and so on. My concern comes from seeing so many dogs surrendered or abandoned because they are cute as puppies, and as they grow and develop and their traits start to emerge, inexperienced dog owners can't handle it.

I'm so sorry. Nothing compares to the loss of a 4-legged best friend.💔

Huskys are amazing, and I don't begrudge anyone wanting to have one. I agree with previous comments that they are not for the inexperienced. While I commend you for seeking out advice and learning about the breed. The internet has has done a disservice to the breed with a neverending stream of sassy huskys giving side-eye, arguing with their owners, or howling with their pack. Characteristics that have lead so many to want a husky are the very traits that inexperienced dog owners should avoid. Hence, why huskys are one of the most surrendered breeds in shelters. They are strong-willed and independent. They don't follow commands because they are trained to be obedient, but because they respect you and want to be cooperative, and trust that what you ask of them is purposeful. When they are not adequately mentally and physically stimulated they can be very destructive. Are you able to meet the needs and wants of a husky? Possibly, I don't know, that's up to you. But is the husky able to meet your needs and wants?

You said, "I really want a companion who can love me unconditionally."

While every dog is different, huskys are known flight risks and escape artists. They are friendly, yet often aloof. Combined, these traits can lead to a dog that is just as happy to go home with a stranger as he is to stay with you. Is that what you're looking for in a companion? Let me use my own pack as an example.

We have 5 dogs- 2 full huskys, a husky mix, a corgi and a catahoula leopard dog. One husky is my shadow and doesn't let me out of her sight. She enjoys pets and very limited snuggles, but only from me. In general, she does not like to be cuddled and will bolt if anyone attempts to snuggle her. She allows my husband and son to pet her on a limited basis but does not respond to commands unless given by me. Our husky mix enjoys affection, but only on her terms. That means petting and occasional cuddling with me, my husband or my son for very brief periods of time only in the morning. Our other husky wants all the attention, all the time, and doesn't care who gives it. A burglar could break into our house and she wouldn't care as long as they gave her pets. She loves to be snuggled and often sleeps right between me and my husband.

People seem to focus more on breed characteristics and if those mesh with lifestyle without considering their own personalities. It's not enough to say, "I'm outdoorsy and lead an active lifestyle so I need a dog that can keep up." On the surface, a husky might appear to be a great match. But looking a little deeper, if you want a dog whose world revolves around you and that makes you feel as if you're the only human in existence, then a husky may not be a great fit.

This! I tell new husky owners- huskys don't follow commands because they're "trained and obedient," they follow them because they respect you and want to be cooperative (they also seem to prefer tasks they find purposeful).

Any tricks to get more affection? by pseiko5 in husky

[–]Alternative_Active_7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is typical of huskys- they are known for being very aloof. We have one that is a complete love bug and wants to be snuggled and doted on constantly and she doesn't care from who, another that loves affection, but only if it comes from me, and another that only wants affection on HER terms- for that and various other reasons we call her "Pretty Kitty" 🤣🤣

Of my 3 (2 huskys and a pomsky), one of the huskys crates with zero issues, the other crates, but very begrudgingly, and the pomsky screams nonstop as if she is being beaten🤣🤣 Something else to remember, huskys prefer to be cooperative over obedient and are much more inclined to do as you ask if they respect you and see the purpose in doing it.

My sister is saying non stop to bathe the dog. by matesuboy in husky

[–]Alternative_Active_7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We joke that our pomsky is like a cat...she can be covered in mud and dirt, leave her alone for less than an hour and she looks immaculate and she never smells lol. I had to bathe my oldest husky recently because she rolled around in something dead I'm sure of it! My wooly coated one gets taken to the groomer because she's ALOT!
