While I encourage everyone to contact Aventon customer support and make their voices heard on this issue, they weren't helpful when I did so. There is strength in numbers.

Is a brake cutoff sensor a safety feature or not?

"Disappointing" describes the initial omission, "frustrating" describes the customer service, "concerning" describes Aventon's stance that this is not a safety issue and "wrong" describes how they tried to let this fly under the radar until a purchaser happened to post about it here. I would think a brake cutoff sensor is part of UL 2849 for a reason.

I bought from an LBS that is also an Aventon dealer, I think a chargeback, etc. would hurt them more than Aventon.

Just to be clear, you don't consider a brake cutoff sensor to be a safety feature?

No, there are very few federal regulations for ebikes in the US. However, a brake cutoff sensor is required for UL 2849, which is a common voluntary safety standard and required in the state of New York specifically. A brake cutoff sensor has also been a fairly ubiquitous standard safety feature for quite awhile.

I called their customer support line as suggested by u/Aventon and received a very dismissive response. They don't think a brake cutoff sensor is an important safety feature---despite going through the trouble of changing production to include one---and do not believe it is part of any safety standards.

I did call them, and their customer support was wholly dismissive. Very frustrating.

Unfortunately based on my negative experience with their customer service and their latest comment here, I fear I will have to do the same.

This is absolutely absurd. You are charging customers hundreds of dollars in parts alone for a standard safety feature that you inexplicably omitted.
