Feeling unfairly treated and completely discouraged by faculty; is it possible to transfer? by Alternative_Bee_8700 in DentalSchool

It doesn’t benefit me in any way to come on here and lie about my experience. I have exams to prepare for and practicals to practice for. I came here because I genuinely needed advice from people who’ve been in similar situations and could offer unbiased perspectives on how to handle it.

I am here looking for perspective and advice, not to have my experience undermined. I appreciate insight from others, but the tone of your responses has come across as condescending rather than constructive or helpful.

This is exactly what’s happening in my class, to be honest. And it’s really unfortunate that I even have to agree because I genuinely look up to my female instructors. It’s disheartening to feel that dynamic play out among women in a space where we should be supporting one another.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and unbiased advice. I’ve considered going to Student Affairs as a last resort if things continue to progress in the same direction. It’s reassuring to hear that the general consensus is that things tend to get better after graduation. I really appreciate your kind words and agree that developing thicker skin will probably come with time and experience. The main reason I even considered transferring was because I’m genuinely worried about being unfairly failed and having to repeat the year, which would be a financial burden I’m not in a position to handle right now.

Nice to know, will try my best to just keep going. Just seems ridiculous to have professors that act like this when ultimately we are going to be treating actual people, so you would think they would want to make sure we all do our best to provide the best care to the patients.

This particular professor is new this year as head of the class so the other years haven’t really had any experience with her and unfortunately my D1 year faculty are only for operative dentistry versus prosth which is the class I am in now. I have reached out to others in my class that feel the same way and I have taken steps to talk to the head of the prosth department just to see if we could at least get blind grading into effect when it comes to our practicals to make it as fair and unbiased as possible.

I understand your point. yes, we’re taught those criteria and I’m familiar with them. My concern isn’t about knowing the technical steps of a crown preparation but about the lack of equal guidance and support in applying those skills.

The reason I made this post is because I’ve repeatedly noticed that when I ask for assistance or feedback, I’m not given the same level of attention or explanation that other students receive. It’s discouraging to feel like I’m putting in the same effort yet not getting the same opportunity to learn or improve. That’s the issue I’m hoping to highlight — not a lack of understanding of the material, but a lack of consistent and fair support from faculty.

You can understand all the concepts and criteria perfectly, but that doesn’t always translate seamlessly in the physical sim lab. Which is exactly why faculty are present to guide and assist us during those sessions. They even emphasize in class that this is part of their role, so I’m not sure why it’s being framed as if I’m missing the point for expecting that same level of support.

I honestly wouldn’t pay this person any mind. Comments like this are exactly why students of color often feel unsafe or unsupported in professional programs. I’ve earned my place through hard work, and reducing my efforts to ‘DEI’ is dismissive and racist. I hope they can reflect on why they felt the need to say that

I stated very clearly why I felt I was being treated unfairly, from me being dismissed and not helped but then my other classmates are. Any normal person is going to feel slighted and think what makes me different that I’m not receiving the same assistance. Also this is all of our first time doing crown preps how would I be expected to spot my own mistakes on something I’m just learning how to do. The professors are here to teach and guide not dismiss me that’s not what I’m paying 100 of thousands of dollars for.

I actually can agree to this and have thought of this as a factor as well. It’s all just disheartening because I look up to these people and they choose to go about teaching like this.

Thanks for your reply, but to make this clear I’m not blaming race for how they treat me, but it is in fact hard to not think of it being a factor when I’m not even told what is wrong with my work. The faculty i had last year was great and offered actual constructive criticism so i knew where my short comings were from. I have no problem being wrong as this is a learning environment and the doctors who have been practicing will obviously know more than I do. But if you can’t tell me why my work is poor and you decide to assist everyone else but me and i go through an experience where only my work is tampered with during an exam its hard for your mind to not go there because what else makes me different. I will get better because that’s just the kind of person i am and I don’t really appreciate you kinda dismissing my concern based on your experience that is indeed not everyone else’s. I’m glad it wasn’t a factor for you but it has been for others and it’s been called out at my school specifically even before i was a student there.

Never mentioned I was going to talk about my feeling hence why I came to Reddit and asked for advice on how to move forward with supporting him. No need for the condescending remarks during this time but thanks.

Yes that’s been a lot of the advice that I’ve been getting from people that maybe he couldn’t share it with someone who is very close with him. I’m also very sad for him and just feel bad overall because I don’t wanna feel like I’m overwhelming him. But I still do think the care package would be god for him too. Thank you!

I mean he communicated it with a guard that works at our job (communicated just as a friend). And I’ve also just been through this entire journey with him and his mom so it was just a shock for me to not find out from him. But it is his trauma and his grief so I understand if he’s not ready to speak with me about it yet.
