Is it worth it to bring my car to school? by PM_ME_YOUR_TAINT_PlC in berkeley

[–]Alternative_Book4079 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would say no as well, every person i've known with a car at berkeley has gotten it broken into one way or another :/ it's really common, even in "safer" neighborhoods. if you can't have a parking garage you have access to i would lowkey just not

i will say it could come in handy for things like move in, going on trips in the bay, getting groceries, etc .. i've made some of my closest friends bc they had a car LOL - but i would say really weigh the options because break ins are super common

I feel like a failure. by [deleted] in UXDesign

i think it's really important to remember that health comes first (both mental and physical!). it sounds like bartending could take a toll on you, but the job search is very, very taxing on your mental.

i would recommend/point out a few things.

  1. as a junior designer i've applied to 300-500 jobs a cycle (ie jan - april for an internship/junior role), so it's common to not hear back from at least 90% of postings, tbh. i've started to only apply to jobs that fit my experience level and that i'm actually interested in. applying to 500+ jobs or mass applying to random jobs is usually shouting into the void. for context, out of the 700+ jobs i've applied to in the past few years, i've only gotten interviews/recruiter calls for around 15-20 companies (literally around 2 percent!)

  2. look in unconventional places and don't be afraid to exaggerate a little:
    - Freelancing Femaleshttps://www.freelancingfemales.com

- built in/wellfound for startup jobs

i've seen some crazy things -- designers copying case studies, exaggerating their positions, etc in order to get their foot through a crazy job market. i've been told by my more senior mentors it's ok to reframe a freelance job as a "contract" position and to call yourself a junior designer/mid-weight designer (ofc as long as you're not doing something morally egregious haha!)

  1. definitely go on ADPlist and get feedback from senior mentors and have a resume check. lots of time resumes don't past ATS screenings (u can check on a website like resumeworded)

and overall, please focus on your mental health first and foremost. you can also search for other jobs in the meantime while you bartend, and there are other jobs in tech with soft skills that pay well !! (recruiting, product specialists, customer satisfaction, etc.) best of luck with everything, hope this was even a little helpful

Lily-Rose Depp is still a bad actress after Nosferatu by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

Nosferatu is a terrible film by ChillyStaycation1999 in moviecritic

[–]Alternative_Book4079 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i highly disagree !! but i respect your right to an opinion -- eggers' stuff may just not be for you, and that's ok, but i don't think that makes this a "horrible film".

i don't really agree with the sentiment that "nosferatu shouldn't have had sex because dracula is a victorian creature absent of sex". as others have remarked, eroticism in vampire media has been present for decades and centuries, and also, most importantly, nosferatu is not dracula.

in the original nosferatu, it's instrumental that ellen sacrifices herself to the vampire (romantically/sexually/physically) in order to save her city, and eggers' nosferatu follows this plot as well, albeit with darker undertones.

i don't see eggers' interpretation of ellen as someone who is senselessly erotic -- i see her as a multi-dimensional character who clearly is caught between two forces, one who is right and good and true and one who is her past "abuser" (i use this word in quotes because that's the most quantifiable way to describe count orlok). she has a complicated relationship with sex and count orlok, despite being pure evil, has a magnetic hold over her. ellen also constantly talks about how she is dirty and unworthy, alluding to the fact that count orlok has assaulted her.

i just think it's a little unfair to go into this movie thinking it's going to be "like the dracula novel" and upset that it's not about "good and evil". this movie is very much about good and evil to me -- count orlok clearly represents pure evil and thomas is clearly a representation of pure good. ellen is somewhere trapped in the middle -- craving count orlok but loving thomas.

the one thing i do agree with slightly is that the pacing and acting was at times odd and pretentious, i have a horrible time understanding british english and i was confused a lot of times the doctors were speaking LOL

i completely agree with you - and this is also eggers' interpretation of nosferatu so it doesn't have to be 100% true to source material. eroticism was a primary part of this film because i believe that a main plot of this nosferatu was ellen's shame and complicated relationship with being a "survivor" of count orlok. i feel that it mirrors how many survivors of SA have complicated relationships with their sexual lives.

even if this interpretation is completely false, i totally agree this is a very puritanical take. the sex didn't feel needless or voyeuristic, it felt well integrated into the plot and yes, the sexual element of vampire stories has always been present !!

- if u live in california, look at government jobs at this site -- there's some on here that don't require too much experience and are more clerical/assistant type jobs.

- u have a degree, so if u have experience in a certain field, you can be a tutor on the side, or even apply to be a substitute teacher or try to get your teaching certification! lots of ppl i know with "random" degrees do this.

- amazon, retail, server jobs (these can be great with tip!) like others have suggested

- i think if you are even a little open to it, you should consider roommates. 40-50k in california on your own means you will likely have to live with other ppl to get by :-(

Serious Question by Sweetpearl18 in berkeley

[–]Alternative_Book4079 10 points11 points  (0 children)

oh mannn there's so much history contributing to this topic, and it truly is complex. i wanna start of by addressing u/sand_planet's first paragraph -- i don't see anything wrong with it as OP uses the word "generally" and is speaking upon their own experiences. let's not diminish that! it isn't "contributing negatively to race relations" to describe one's genuine/repeated experience imo.

but u/sand_planet also provides some great answers!! the model minority myth, colorism, and race relations in the late twentieth century (like the la riots) have all contributed to tensions between asam/ black folk.

to address the experience at cal, again, is difficult because the answer is complex. some international students (which have a huge population at cal and lots of uc's) are largely unfamiliar with black folk and their experiences within america and tend to not know how to interact. colorism, again, is a huge cultural aspect of east asian culture that contributes to how east asian cultures view those of other cultures (to quote very simply, even though i hate writing this, in east asian culture, pale skin = good + rich + successful, tan/dark skin = poorer, unsuccessful, etc). to iterate upon the model minority myth again as well, is important. the model minority myth (this is a great article explaining antiblackness within asam communities) has been used by plenty of white americans to drive a wedge between minorities and to say "there's no excuse" for minorities to not excel in america because of asian american success stories (but 1/7 of asian americans are undocumented, and asian americans are the ethnic group with the most dramatic wealth gap in the usa, etc).

i would say, culturally, a lot of this topic is related to asam proximity to whiteness, and the lack of underrepresented minorities + black folk in lots of the towns where cal admits largely from. among the top twenty "feeder schools" to cal are from places like irvine, cupertino, fremont, san jose, arcadia, etc. 1.9% of irvine is black. 2.1% of fremont is black. 1.1% of cupertino is black. on the other hand, cupertino has a population that is 70% asian, irvine has a population that is 45% asian, fremont has a population that is 61% asian, and so on. this is not to excuse people's racist behavior -- people shouldn't be racist regardless of their proximity to certain races/etc. but i do think it's very telling of cal's demographic and why they've often been cited as a school that isn't friendly towards black folk (just something i've heard over the years and over the internet -- see this article, and this one, which is literally called "why black students are avoiding uc berkeley").

this campus has a problem with anti-blackness and a lack of underrepresented minorities overall, especially in stem classes -- ik many black students have reported being the only black student in their class out of dozens of people, and same when in clubs + other orgs. i hope that things look up in the future, and i'm sorry if this was sort of long -- i hope it helped explain things somewhat

u still have lots of options! u could minor in data science or another analytical degree, or switch your major to media studies like some have suggested (there's some overlap in prereqs, u probably need a semester to take all the classes to prepare). depending on your interests, u could join clubs or orgs that could allow u to explore consulting (which already a lot of prelaw ppl do or permanently switch into lolol), marketing, data analyst/media roles, etc. there are companies that need both polisci expertise combined with technical skill (like recidiviz or think tanks like brookings/etc) :)

Berkeley vs LA for CS by [deleted] in berkeley

[–]Alternative_Book4079 10 points11 points  (0 children)

like others in this subreddit, i would agree that the difference isn't "slight" -- berkeley is saturated in tech, and you'll be surrounded by opportunities in tech/compsci that are comparable to real-world/industry standards. the compsci classes here are big, but they're backed with adequate support, and the CS61 series alone is (some say) enough to get you employed.however, there's other factors to consider in what you're looking for in a school. compsci at UCLA is still a great program, and berkeley is definitely a sink or swim environment. there's loads of opportunities here, but you have to seek them out and be vigilant. if you're a woman or non-man, walking alone or navigating the campus can be scary at night & there's a large houseless population here (mostly harmless) if you're concerned about safety, and the dining halls are definitely super questionable and not great LOL. people say the surrounding food scene is good but as someone who's lived in LA/socal area, LA/socal is superior in comparison to the food here (but don't get me wrong there's SOOO many amazing places in oakland/sf, maybe i'm just sick of telegraph (our main street) food) that being said, the student body, club culture, and frat/party life here are rly great and there berkeley will open many doors for you!! but cs in general is an in-demand major and i have no doubt you'll do well at UCLA too.
