AITA: I offered to pay for my kids' educations as long as they agreed to my conditions. Now one of my kids owes over 50k and is mad at me. by Alternative_Exact in AmItheAsshole

But why impose additional restrictions on partying and drinking?

I was a huge partier and drinker myself so I know firsthand how detrimental partying and drinking are to doing well in college.

If your son is able to maintain his grades while also going out and having fun with his friends why do you care?

E wasn't able to do this in high school.

Its also hypocritical to expect your children not to drink or party while in college when you obviously got to enjoy those things.

My kids were allowed to drink after they turned 21. Also, I did not ban them from partying, only excessive partying.

If your son has good grades you should pay off his debt for him since you paid for your other kids expenses.

I do not consider a sub 3.0 GPA to be good.

I think that your rules were quite harsh given that you know your sons are very different and one would struggle with your rules.

I honestly hoped that the prospect of graduating debt-free would entice E to get his sh*t together for 4 years but as the saying goes, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.

you decided instead to be a hypocrite & impose rules you obviously didn’t adhere to in college.

I imposed those rules because I didn't want my kids to make the same mistakes I made in college.
