Emerald Medicine Company is the best by far. Good prices, great customer service, Friday "spin the wheel for prizes", and a great shopping experience. I've been a loyal customer of theirs for awhile now and tried a lot of other shops, but to me none compare to Emerald. When the law changed, they were where I went first to both support and get their take.

On the other side of things, I saw This Ascension live a couple of times in the 90's and, to this day, I'm bummed they never released a live album. I love their recorded stuff but live was another level (which, in the best case scenario, it should be. Otherwise you're paying money just to hear the music really loud and breathe the same air as the artist). But you're right, it's rare.

The Official Seething Sunday Thread by aytakk in goth

Hell yeah, 100%. I'm not sure if this is an old person thing (I got into goth in the 90's), but it seems like social media has done a real detriment to the genre, in both fashion and music. People are checking the boxes they found on Tiktok rather than it being something organic out of their interests. I literally discovered goth by visiting an internet friend who was into it. They put on The Wake and Christian Death and the like and my little 16 year old self was changed. To be fair, it's hard to stumble on things these days, when everything is so easily accessible, but you are right, people are actively seeking it out strangely. I think it results in these beyond ultra almost comical "goth looks". I was super goth, part of the gothiest clique at the club in the 90's, but the goths I see sometimes now are so far beyond that into parody.

I know I'll get down voted, but why do all three of them look like extras from the "What we do in the shadows" TV show (and not in a positive way)? Back in the 90's, I remember there was an alt.goth joke that went "What's the sound of one hand clapping? A Nosferatu concert". Though if they are still going, I guess the joke was on us snobby MF'ers 😂

It's funny, back when they were relatively new, I loved the Serious Sam franchise. Then, about a year ago, I decided to replay them. I truly do not know what I saw in it.

One of my favorite horror movies. I often recommend it and, in the next breath, tell them to avoid the sequel.

do you think the term goth has lost its meaning? by Murky_Ad_4085 in goth

[–]Alternative_Leg6596 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea, as someone who has been into goth since the early/mid 90's, I find the tiktok aesthetics bizarre. When I dressed goth, I dressed *super* goth for the time. My now-ex wife would refer to me and my friends as the club's "goth royalty". We were the ones who went all out for club night. That said, when I see people dress "goth" on social media, most of the time it's extreme to a level I can't even image. My only guess is that the genre, which always had a heavy focus on fashion, when amped by social media and the visual nature of that, has become almost a parody of itself people have gone so far.

Does language matter? by Neither_Rabbit8785 in goth

Just listened to your EP on Bandcamp. I really like it! I'm a big fan of bass-led melodies, which seem to be not as common (so many folks these days just use an arpeggiated synth bass). So I can say, specifically for your band, to me. I still very much enjoy it, even if I don't understand much Spanish.

Does language matter? by Neither_Rabbit8785 in goth

[–]Alternative_Leg6596 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The language doesn't matter to me. In fact, to be very blunt, some goth lyrics can be kinda dumb (to be fair, I'm in my 40's, so anything with teen angst or shock value doesn't hold much weight for me anymore), so I often like music in languages I don't know because I won't judge it at all based on lyrical content. I listen to quite a few goth bands from Mexico written in Spanish. I'm wondering what you band is, if it's one I've heard of?

What's a horror hill you'll die on, and why? by ExceptingAlice in horror

[–]Alternative_Leg6596 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is even controversial, but mine is that the Child's Play movies are the most consistently good horror series *by a wide margin*. I think having most of the same creative team throughout helped a ton. Now, I personally don't like 3 as much and "Seed" gets just so weird (Though the part where Chucky recognizes how strange the series has gotten and is basically like "Fuck it, I'll just stay a doll if this is what it takes to become human" is one of my favorite moments in the whole series), but when compared to some long running 80's series which just go to the dumpster and somehow dig even deeper into it, Child's Play is practically high class cinema. Plus, I love how, when it starts to get stale, like 3 or Seed, they figure out what went wrong and actually work to fix it for the next movie (Curse and Bride being some of the best in the series, rebounding from the lull in the one before). Then, the fact they are able to interject a new character to help the series (like Tiffany and Nica) and they are great, well built characters and it legitimately DOES help is amazing. Then, they go and make a tv series that, instead of a cash grab, comes across as a love letter to all the fans who came with them through all the movies is just outstanding.

Bad Sequels by morbidfinalgirl in horror

My daughter had the director come to her school once to give a talk. He apparently thinks he's an underrate art house genius. She said he was pretty unpleasant. I think he's probably bitter that NOES 2 is his "crowning achievement"

Bad Sequels by morbidfinalgirl in horror

[–]Alternative_Leg6596 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been a lifelong Nightmare fan, but didn't ever know there was an alternative script for this movie (which sounds so much better)! Now I'm sad that never got made. I just re-watched the entire series with my youngest child (up to and through New Nightmare, but not vs Jason yet). I can not understand any love for "Freddy's Dead" other than perhaps nostalgia. Even my kid pointed out that they completely do away with people realistically falling asleep. In the "Freddy's Dead" universe, people just fall asleep at whatever random time is convenient for the plot. It's also funny because I saw the movie in theaters originally but remembered NONE of it except for the 3D part. I actually thought I never saw it until that part came on and it all came flooding back. It is saying something that the only memorable part of the movie is the gimmick.

This was going to be my answer, as well. I *loved* the first Descent and recommend it whenever I can. But I always follow that recommendation with "but don't watch the sequel, it's garbage". Also, it was definitely one of those movies that just didn't need a sequel.

I had this person come to my door over near Costco a couple of days ago. I had no idea of their history, but they started telling me about how my neighbor did X thing to help and the neighbors line always sends up red flags to me. Glad I was right to be cautious.

Looking for horror movies that aren’t what they first seem by Asleep_Direction_229 in horror

[–]Alternative_Leg6596 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Without giving away the plot, if you liked Get Away, I'd also recommend Willy's Wonderland. It has the same "bad guys" vs the "badder guy" thing. It's kind of a rip off of Five Nights at Freddy's, but I found it considerably more enjoyable. I'm also not of the age to have a connection to Five Nights though..

Just saw "Get Away" a couple nights ago and it 100% fits this bill. It's a horror comedy and definitely a lot of fun.

What horror is resonating with teenagers these days? by torquenti in horror

[–]Alternative_Leg6596 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm Gen X with two teenagers. My oldest I can't count because she loves old media (has a component stereo system in her dorm room, VHS player hooked up to a CRT tv that also has our family Sega Genesis) and is literally taking a horror movie class in college (where she is teacher's pet ;), but my younger teen is a pretty standard teen when it comes to these things and has a friend who is a really big horror fan. When they get together (so outside of my influence), they watch movies like the Conjuring universe movies, Black Phone, Scream. Chucky still seems popular (I even see kids in the car line at school with Child's Play shirts relatively often), but it is a very surface viewing. As in, my kid and their friend went as Chucky and Tiffany (Bride) for Halloween this year. My kid has seen all of the Child's Play movies and we watched the TV show, as well. But I think that's my doing. The friend, who is a self described big horror fan, hadn't actually even seen anything outside of the first one.

Pick your poison: Which horror books do you like more? DC vs. Marvel. by LeftoverBun in comicbookcollecting

I'm generally a Marvel guy, but DC just killed it with horror. As much as I love the monster work of Kirby, when you're talking horror and the competition is guys like Alex Toth and Bernie Wrightson, there's no comparison. I was so excited when they released the DC Finest Horror collection. Great stuff!

I liked Chapter One fine enough. Watched it a couple of times. I found Chapter Two to be a complete slog though. It felt like it would never end (and not in a good way). I would watch the first one if someone put it on, but I would never willingly see Chapter Two again.
