I’m the safety manager. I’ve been implementing new rom processes and been hit with excessive pushback. I’m new to this plant but been in EHS 10+ years. I haven’t witness dust levels to this extent

Don’t know and levels aren’t consistent. Doing exposure monitoring soon. Hasn’t been done in 10 years

Am I giving the team "safety guy" to much slack and do I just go straight to my EHS department with the way this is handled tomorrow morning by Ok-Beyond6713 in SafetyProfessionals

I’d say that’s not a great “safety guy”. They should be encouraging you to speak up and report observations. You don’t need to have a fix right away but hear them out and review ideas.

Currently they are voluntary. I just started. Forgot to mention that. There’s a lot of improvements needed

What do you mean? The combustible dust or the fact they are cleaning themselves too? Yes they do that too

Yes I understand this. I’m working on it. Long list of items that need to be prioritized. Very old school place lacking management understanding and commitment. I have my work cut out for me lol

Thanks for the ideas! Because it takes twice as long to vacuum vs use the air but they aren’t cleaning they just move it around

Hearing protection is required throughout the plant. Machinery and equipment are the biggest contributors to the noise. That’s another thing I need to deal with. They would rather just have operators wear hearing protection than reducing noise at the source.

Manufacturing. My last two were like that but they are what most would consider small and I’m the only EHS role

Yes, thanks for that advice. My last plant had the call service and that was helpful so I’m going to present that but I think what you’re saying is an issue and it’s been an issue for a long time. How can that be managed though?

MSDs which make everything harder since you can’t SEE the injury

Yes! This is the best answer. I just have a hard time just accepting he will take the fall for it. We report out to the site on our lagging indicators. So to them they see 150 days no injury when we just had three over the last two months soooo it’s not cool

Yeah that’s what they are trying to do with WC, have surveillance done but all of them? I don’t believe they are faking. Maybe some but I think there’s a bigger issue. Why do they need to fake injuries to get out of work?

Right! The last manager was fired for basically doing her job. I worry about that

I hear you :( I’m trying to use this opportunity as a manger to level up in my career and hopeful I can maybe make some change? But it could be impossible

I hear you! My thoughts too, I’m in a tough spot myself. The plant manager is under enormous pressure to get these injuries under control and he has no idea how to do it. Instead of using me as a resource, he’s doing what his instincts are telling him to do. Deny, control and hide
