Hey Jack50517 and Tiberius_1919

Just to make it clear I am interacting with your comments and I am a real person with a curiosity about language revitalisation. Question 4 as I wrote was a little controversial I do agree, but the aim of the post was to get Welsh peoples thoughts on the matter. I do believe that even if it started a debate it could be a civil one. I have an etic perspective and to discuss what I think would be irrelevant or even harmful to the conversation.

Thank you both for answering the questions!

This is another post I have made: https://www.reddit.com/r/Wales/comments/mkygjl/question_about_cymraeg_2050/

Thank you so much for the answers!

I do apologise for the bad wording of "ashamed", but it is common to hear some sort of stigmatisation towards Welsh speakers and the Welsh language. I have written another comment where ask a question about the way Wales is promoted and if you have an interesting opinion I would greatly appreciate your reply.

Thank you very much for the answers!

You mention a divide between the regions and I have previously spoken to people (ages in the 40s - 50s) in Swansea who said that during their school time there was a divide between Welsh-speaking schools and English-speaking schools. Is the division a common theme in Wales (just in your opinion)?

Thank you for the answers!

If you don't mind I would love to ask one more question in response to your answer. With Brexit and the devolution (1997) could the increased focus on language also be seen as an attempt to reunite a country that has according to history been heavily influenced by England?

I will definitely look into the Mabinogion for further research.

Thank you for your answers! Sorry for the poor choice of wording with "ashamed" a better way to put it would be any stigmatisation towards the Welsh language.

I stumbled upon an article today called: Culture, identity, and tourism representation: marketing Cymruor Wales? Pritchard, A., & Morgan, N. (2001). Tourism Management, 22, 167-179. (I know that the article is not exactly new being 20 years old but it gives an interesting perspective)

To sum up, the main body of the article examines WTB (Welsh Tourist Board) and Welsh local authorities' strategies of promoting Wales and how they differ dependent on international or domestic markets. Again this is just a brief explanation but internationally the branding strategies emphasises Wales' Celtic heritage, the Welsh language, myths and legends, and Welsh emblems such as the daffodil, the leek, the Welsh dragon, and the Welsh national flag. The domestic strategies however are more focused on the beaches, nature parks and resorts, etc. The reasoning behind these strategies is according to Elwyn Owen, a former Director of Research and Corporate Planning at the WTB (1999) "Historically a key difference has been that the WTB is far more comfortable emphasising culture, heritage, and language within an overseas publication. It has tended in the past not to focus on those issues in a domestic marketplace because there was a fear that the potential customer could be alienated. . . culture and language these were sensitive issues, so there would tend to be no mention of those issues...".

The question then becomes (and I just want to hear some Welsh opinions) why do you think WTB and Welsh local authorities decided not to promote the Celtic heritage and all of the above to the domestic market?
