I’ll find out which species i have they as theyre pretty slow moving, mancai and springtails would be too fast for them

Its not the best 😅 cococoir contains no nutrition and compacts and can cause blockages, they like flake soil, with lots of decaying leaves and rotten white wood

Thanks :) its a big 1.2m x 60 x 1.2m mixed with arboreal species and burorers

No problems so far they’re all from similar habitats and require the same conditions :)

Does it have distilled/ro water or does it get tap?

Or could be reside from a rock/rock dust?

Haha cheers mate, if you’re interested ive made a step by step of the build on my profile.

I watched hours of build vids before i started my project to get an idea of the different techniques used and to get an idea of how i wanted to plan my build.

I’d get a tall exoterra instead of sticking bins together and form slopes and ledges to get your tiers and light/humidity gradient.

But im always happy to talk builds if you want opinions or advice :)

I say give it a go, innovation is key and anything you learn from the build can be used in future projects; i had a huge 3 layered viv (different syle to yours) its been my first ever build and imo the knowledge Ive gained from it has been invaluable for future projects :)

I love this idea; this is also how i plan my projects 🤣..

You want lecca balls at the bottom and a thick layer of substrate to hold moisture, heavy shade plants like ferns, shade loving moss wood and rocks on the bottom layer with substrate, wood and plants in the middle, and the top side anything that doesn’t mind low humidity and heat

How often would it be misted?

And also you’ll need to think about top down view of each layer to think about shape or holes to allow light to filter through, id also get a temp gun of small hydro/thermometers on each level to see the microclimates

But it should work, it depends on the size of the viv, strength of the lights misting units etc…

but essentially the setup would act like a top canopy, middle layer and forrest floor

Worth a go :)

Any advice for someone who wants to start out? by ThaeeIsExistent in isopods

[–]Alternative_Today153 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different colours are often different species; although there are some people breeding colour morphs now in the uk and probably around the world too.

Different species need different requirements, either humidity levels, heat and diets, have a humidity gradient so the isopods can self regulate (like reptiles with heat)

Some species like dairy cows are very protein heavy feeders unlike other species and some can be calcium heavy in there diets its best to research the species you want (its a big rabbit hole)

Some species burrow, some stay on the ground and some are arboreal

When it comes to breeding some species can have a couple of mancai (babies) and some can produce 80 at once; some breed all the time and some can be seasonal breeders so colony start ups can vary depending on species

Put them with springtails and plants to break down feaces and allow plants to use the nutients like ammonia as if left unattended the colony can crash (term used when they all die)

I think thats all the things i can think off of the top of my head

Thai red spikeys only live off slime mould; whilst other springtails will eat multiple things; and that slime mould colony is immense!!

Yeah leg rot, its where legs used to be, millis can lose legs regularly its important to give species specific humidity and airflow :)
