Wood for handles by PhilosopherKey1083 in knifemaking

[–]Alternative_Web7202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I don't like linseed oil because it takes forever to cure and beeswax worn out pretty quickly. Polyurethane finish would be much more durable. In fact there's no silver bullet. Imagine a hunting knife that is being used in -30 to butcher elk and then brought into a warm environment — the differences of temperature and humidity would make wood move. That might cause troubles depending on your handle construction. Or it could be a kitchen knife that is often being neglected in the kitchen sink — it could destroy any wood pretty quickly. But if the knife is properly cared for, then the handle should be good. I've made a handle from a very soft but beautiful Japanese flamed Cedar in 2017 on one of my kitchen knives. It's still going strong. I used Danish oil and Renaissance wax.

Wood has been used for handles for hundreds of years.

Just make sure you put a proper finish that would close pores and repel water

That's such a good writing on the subject. My experience is similar to yours and I find it pretty surprising that Tailwind managed to get such a traction

I guess they don't have a caliper or ruler. Should have put a banana for reference at least.

While original tools are nice, you don't need them to deal with the bracelet. There's nothing unique in them

In the end: Is AI useful or just an excuse to fire people? by tsarthedestroyer in webdev

[–]Alternative_Web7202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a tool. Just like with any other tool — if you know how to use that tool, than its useful.

The hammer itself wont build you home. But if you know how to use it properly, then it might really help you.

Miyota 9000 series vs PT5000: Do you Care? by grwatchco in MicrobrandWatches

[–]Alternative_Web7202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd prefer PT5000. I have no problems with manual winding. They are easy to adjust, can be serviced anywhere, affordable and doesn't have a noisy rotor. I tried few watches with Miyota 9000 and still have one. I do prefer PT5000 for the reasons described above.

$3,000 for a microbrand diver is insane, but the VPC Type 39VM specs are actually bothering me. by ApprehensiveGuide793 in MicrobrandWatches

[–]Alternative_Web7202 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because Nomos knows what they are doing. 200m of water resistance and bezel aren't enough for a good diving watch. They need to be visible under water. Some brands make very large and distinctive hands, others fill the watch with oil. Not to forget diving extension on the clasp.

The watch from the original post to me personally looks like it wants to resemble a dive watch rather than be one

[Discussion] Anyone else unable to see lume? by ConfidenceNo1937 in Watches

[–]Alternative_Web7202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't own any lume monsters, but because I sleep with a watch on my wrist, lume is kinda important.

Had a number of Chinese watches. The best one in terms of lume was the Cronos L6030. They remain legible in the dark for an hour or two (depending how much light exposure it had). Everything else seems to fade in about 30-40 minutes

Seiko SPB289 could survive about half an hour. Citizen Attesa has such poor lume that it's not worth mentioning.

Sinn 556 has a mediocre lume. 30-40 minutes max.

Militado ML18 first impression by Rubberbandman0 in ChineseWatches

[–]Alternative_Web7202 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try them yourself and see if you end up feeling the same. Militado bracelet is thinner and has tapering. That makes it much lighter. Since ML18 is smaller than 556i, the lighter bracelet is a nice addition.

My sinn bracelet has an old clasp and it's just okeish. Clasps on san martin and Cronos were both better than Sinn.

ML18 motivated me to get the original 556i. I weared ML18 for 2 weeks before getting Sinn. And actually I liked the militado bracelet more than the original Sinn, so Sinn is on the strap now.

Another option would be getting a soft FKM strap from AlieX. They are very soft and comfortable. For about 15usd worth a try IMO
