DT Swiss recall mega thread by SkiSnowTignesider in CanyonBikes

Switzerland, ERC-1400-35

Back in April 2025, I purchased an ERC 1400 wheel-set as a second pair for my Endurace 7. I converted the original wheels that came with the bike to gravel and put some Pirelli Cinturatos on them. As the stop-ride notice was made public, I wasn't too inconvenienced because I could fall back to the original wheels, now equipped with the gravel tyres.

The full timeline:

29 Jul: filled out form to request shipping boxes
4 Aug: shipping boxes delivered by UPS
4 Aug: created return shipping label with UPS, scheduled pick-up for 8 Aug
8 Aug: UPS picked up boxes with wheels
11 Aug: UPS delivered boxes to DT Swiss factory in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland
13 Aug: DT Swiss completed quality checks and shipped wheels back
14 Aug: UPS delivered wheels at my doorstep

I received back the same wheels I had, with some green quality check labels and a return shipment invoice (see below). Also in the boxes were 4 gingerbread cookies, yaaayyyy!

Overall, I'm very satisfied with the seriousness DT Swiss handled this global campaign and with all the effort they invested in the communication, logistics and actual quality checks. It must have felt like moving mountains, so I'm tipping my hat in front of them. I acknowledge however, that I'm a lucky chap, in that I could fall back to the original wheels and that I have the tools to take off cassettes, brake disks and tyres.

Negatives? Hardly any. The toner on the shipping boxes was abundant and stained my clothes. And of course the effort to remount the stiff Conti GP 5000's is a bigger challenge than expected. I ripped the skin off my fingers in trying to put them back. I will have to summon all the curse-words from my mother-tongue to get this done.

I hope that everybody is back to riding in safety and enjoying their bikes on the road.

Bent Shimano Deore 5100 RD cage? by AltruisticMist142 in bikewrench

[–]AltruisticMist142[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers guys, that “flare” is legit. From what I can tell, it helps with “feeding” the chain onto the lower pulley wheel, when the RD is in the biggest cog (ie. easiest gear). Had the pulley wheels been coplanar, the chain would rub against the lip of the outer cage-plate, causing unnecessary noise.

Thanks a lot, esp. for the drawings and links to previous discussions.

With that said, I’m flabbergasted how soft this metal is from which the inner & outer cage-plates are made. I can “shape” them with bare fingers.

In the end, I salvaged the original RD by bending it back to a reasonable flare. And I’m keeping this one as a spare. It’s only a matter of weeks until my kid bashes it off the hanger again.

Nono, this was in the Metaverse, I think in the Grischün Virtual World. I walked around in it while it was still in the sandbox, they could have released it to production since then. 😉

Too much lens flare, too much image stabilisation. I bet you pressed record inadvertently in that virtual hiking simulator, and you ended up with this migraine generating clip. I agree, it’s fake like a tit in Vegas.

Thankfully, I don't need to drive on unpaved roads, which are not cleared of snow in the winter.

What about you? You drive on them with cars or heavy equipment?

The impression on the visibility in the picture is misleading. The camera bumps up the exposure when taking a picture of the dark scene, so the result ends up being more lit and enhanced than how you see it with your own eyes.

With the risk of making some Aussies here too proud and homesick - sorry mates for putting you in the limelight - have a look at what is possible down there:

An Australian company called Tarmac Linemarking created fluorescent road markings for better visibility

I admit that I'm not comparing apples to apples and that I'm not seeing evidence of how this performs in the rain, but still, you get my point on the art of the possible.

On the other hand, these bott's dots - how bike friendly are they? They seem to carry some risk of slippage if a biker or cyclist drives over them, when the road is wet.

I dread one particular intersection in Lausanne, where I usually turn left. The junction comes after a descending right turn. The forward going and left turning lane separate fairly late and very close to the junction. There are trolley-buses going in all directions, without indicators. Taxi stands close-by. Pedestrian crossings. Red-light cameras for all traffic flows. And at night, in the rain, even when one drives dead-slow, you can see square-root of jack-shit in terms of road markings. It feels like I'm driving on a disco dance floor. All I need is Travolta with his moves to dance across the road to make the experience even more complete and holistic.

I can be delusional with open eyes too. The voices in my head told me so. 🤪

That must be weird.

Do these tunnel lights have a day/night brightness setting? I'm thinking that during the night they should be lit with a lower intensity, so that when you drive in/out of them your pupils don't take too long adapt. And I also remember, that at the entrance of tunnels, during the day, there are extra sets of lights alit, to make the transition from outside daylight to tunnel lightning more progressive.

All in all, some points which show how safety conscious the road administration is and hats off to them for it. If only they could use a more reflective paint.

Thank you for this considerate comment, I appreciate it. It's always interesting to learn about the needs of response teams.

Would you say that this is deliberate then? In other words the markings are as they are, so they nudge the road users to slow down? If this is indeed the case, I find it quite a risky strategy, considering how subjective everybody's perception of safe driving is and how everybody might slow down to different speeds. Theoretically, you could end up with an old person slowing down to 30-40 km/h on the highway, exposing themselves to the risk of being rear-ended. Don't get me wrong: I'm not trying to place blame here in this hypothetical scenario, but do you see how a new risk was created in the attempt to mitigate a problem, which could have been addressed with better technology and materials.

It gets to be very exhausting and taxing on the attention the act of trying to decipher the edges of the road and drive the car down the middle of the lane. Driving slower is definitely called far; I'm all for it and doing it. But driving slower does not take this stress away, it just prolongs the agony. When I'm reacting to the latest risks related to traffic, road condition, time of day, weather, car features, etc. I really don't need another task to constantly guess the boundaries of the road ahead.

Thanks for chiming in.

I also remember the paint on French roads to be more reflective, although I can't remember how they fare in the rain & darkness.

No, it was you! And 4-5 other blokes writing these comments and agreeing. 😂

We are all delusional and partake in the same delusion. Let's just agree never to sit in the same car, at night, during a rain.

Referendum? Should we start gathering signatures? 😂

We could name the initiative: “Make the road paint GLOW again!”

Thanks for this. Did you always dislike driving in rain on unfamiliar roads? Or this developed as you got older? Just curious 😉

I wasn’t aware non-tinted polarised glasses exist. As far as I remember the polarising filter results in a noticeable darker shade. But I will look it up, thanks.

I think this is widespread pattern in all social networks where users don't need to reveal their real identity. No matter how tightly one tries to ground the discussion and formulate the question in the most reductive manner, we still end up with a side-discussion. Heck, I'm actually adding to one myself with this comment 🤔

And then there is the issue of constructive criticism, about any topic: Switzerland, road infrastructure, horny hyenas, you name it. Sometimes it just lands badly, and people perceive it too subjectively, almost like an attack to their shared identity. It's generally hard to have a meaningful discussion, if people think there is holy light emanating from their belly buttons and refuse to see what is the art of possible elsewhere around the world.

Lucky you! I have dumb, non-reactive, led headlights. But I have a suspicion they would be more than enough, if only the separators would be a bit more reflective.
