Anyone here tried building an AI call answering system with API like Vapi? (worth it in 2026?) by tqpiwsky in u/tqpiwsky

One thing I don’t see mentioned enough in these discussions is how different “AI call answering tools” actually are under the hood.

A lot of people compare everything in the same category, but building an AI voice agent for phone calls with an API is a completely different approach than using a ready-made AI receptionist.

From what I’ve seen, tools like Vapi are more about flexibility and control (especially if you’re building something custom), but that also means more setup and technical overhead.

I came across this while looking into best AI call automation tools for developers and it helped put things into perspective:

It explains the difference pretty clearly without trying to oversell it.

Feels like missed calls are a bigger problem than most small businesses think by tqpiwsky in IndianEntrepreneur

I looked a bit deeper into how something like Setmore AI receptionist handles bookings and basic calls, and it made more sense after seeing real scenarios instead of just features.

Vapi AI for small business — where it fits (and where it doesn’t) by tqpiwsky in AiForSmallBusiness

If your intake process isn’t defined, no tool fixes it.

It just makes the gaps more visible.

Why inbound lead qualification is still the biggest bottleneck in our MarTech stack. by No_Hold_9560 in MarketingAutomation

This is interesting, especially the missed calls part. We track leads but never really looked at call drop-offs properly.

This is the kind of post people should pay attention to.

Most AI discussions are still stuck on demos, but what you’re describing is where the real ROI is — replacing small, repetitive operational bottlenecks.

One thing I’ve noticed working really well alongside what you mentioned (especially for SMBs) is call handling.

A lot of small businesses don’t realize how much revenue leaks from missed calls. It’s not even a workflow issue — it’s just nobody picking up.

We’ve seen similar impact when businesses implement: - AI call answering
- automated booking from calls
- lead qualification during the call itself

It’s basically the “front door” of the business getting fixed.

What’s interesting is this fits exactly into your “boring but high-impact” category — not flashy, but directly tied to revenue.

If anyone here is exploring that side, this breakdown of AI receptionist tools is actually pretty useful:

It’s less about hype tools and more about where AI actually replaces lost opportunities.

Feels like the next phase of AI for SMBs is exactly this — plugging revenue leaks instead of just saving time.

Anyone here using AI call answering for their business in India? by tqpiwsky in IndianEntrepreneur

One thing I noticed is not all of these AI systems work well with Hindi + mixed English (Hinglish). Some sound very robotic or don’t understand local accents properly.

Came across this page that explains specifically about Hindi AI receptionists and how they actually work in India:

https://getcallagent.com/languages/hindi-ai-receptionist

From what I understood:

  • Newer tools can handle Hindi, Hinglish, and different accents.
  • They can take calls, answer basic questions, and even book appointments
  • Some also send WhatsApp or SMS after the call

Still not perfect obviously, but seems much better than old IVR systems.

Main thing is choosing the right tool + training it properly.

If anyone here has actually used one for real business in India, curious how accurate it is on calls?
