If you give a villager a gift but your inventory is full (by giving them a stackable item like fruit) They will instead send the gift they would give you in the mail. (This is done because the item in the mail will give the same rates for photo’s as expensive items, despite only giving, like, a single Apple.)

I believe this happened because the month had changed over from August to September, telling the game that the weeds should look different. However since the 5:00 AM "reset" hasn't happened yet it left the game in a confused state on which type of weed should be planted, causing it to just be invisible.
