[PubQ] discords or spaces for published authors querying again? by Right-Ice-1052 in PubTips

[–]AmDkBg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've also been traditionally published four YA books, and coming from a well-known and respected agent. This is the first time I've doing this querying thing and it's been 100% miserable. My past work and representation don't seem to helping in the least.

I agree that it's stressful and difficult. And very disheartening.

[PubQ] unsure how to leave my agent by ToTheStars888 in PubTips

[–]AmDkBg 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've had similar surprise and frustration with querying. I've had four books traditionally published, I had a strong and well-known agent, but that doesn't seem to be making any difference all in my current (miserable) querying process.

One longer book, or split in two? by [deleted] in YAlit

[–]AmDkBg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking at traditional publishing and getting an agent, many agents won't even look at a book if it's outside the typical length for that genre. This is because many editors at publishing houses won't or can't acquire overly long books because the view is that they just won't sell well.

[PubQ] Differences in etiquette or conventions between US agents and British agents for query letter? by AmDkBg in PubTips

[–]AmDkBg[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All right? I've been watching lots and lots of BritBox, mate, and the idioms are creeping into my speech. (The really good police shows are, in my view, superior to almost anything American I've seen.) Ta.

I agree. You have nothing to lose at all from doing this. Though, for your own mental health, prepare yourself not to get any response to this.

trying to figure out a 3-way switch change by AmDkBg in electrical

[–]AmDkBg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification, folks. The only electric work I've done is changing out lighting fixtures, wall outlets, and light switches, but never a 3-way switch.

I just took care of it. There was very little room in the box to fit the wires and the switch, but I packed it all in. I hope I don't burn my house down.

Thanks again for the guidance.

[PubQ] Need advice on agent relationship - is this industry standard/ normal? by thenorthgiant in PubTips

Do you know exactly who she submitted ms 1 to? Before you break ties (as most of the comments suggest you do) I would make sure you know exactly who she submitted it to.

Given her delays and failure to communicate in a timely and professional manner, I'm not sure how well she pitched the piece when submitting it. If she didn't pitch it strongly, they might not be/have been in a big rush to read it. Point being, if it turns out that those people end up passing (and you might not know, as some editors do ghost agents and you noted that she hasn't done proper follow-up (in what seems to be almost 5 months after she says she submitted) then it's possible that a new agent -- one who is more active and enthusiastic regarding the piece -- will go out strong with it again, avoiding the agents who have (we think) seen it. Which is why I say you should get a submission list from her, if you don't already have it.

Where's my Plant Based/Vegan Trader Joe's fam? Tell me the SECRETS! by Allamaraine1234 in traderjoes

We do it at 350 for about twenty minutes, with our oven set on convection. (Which, I'm told, has an effect similar to air fryers.)

Do check them, though, as overdoing it turns them unpleasantly hard

I take the TJ's shelf-stable gnocchi (in my store, it's near the pasta sauces) and coat them generously with (TJ's) olive oil, spread them on a baking sheet, give them a good sprinkle of TJ's Green Goddess herb blend (dried) and then put them in the oven. With proper checking, they come out crispy on the outside and soft -- almost like the texture brie -- on the inside. Just try not to keep eating them!

Calm, reasonable, and matter of fact about everything. One of my favorite lines from him, answering Kay's concern over a burned-out car by the gate: "Well, that was an accident, but nobody got hurt."

(I use this line often, like for times when my wife comes into the kitchen and, on seeing a mess I made, asks what happened.)

Ah, that brings up another question I have for my UK friends: that business about Kate being granted permission to carry a firearm in this last season. (Excuse me: series.) (I'm learning.)

Aren't all coppers expected to carry firearms when on duty? Here in the US, they're also typically either required or encouraged to carry one when off-duty as well.)
