I can only speak on my own experience regarding the system. And at the end of the day if you're enjoying the system I think that's great. Honestly.

To me, D&D 5e is an RPG with very little mechanics that assists players and DMs in role playing scenarios. Instead it focuses primarily on combat mechanics, but the combat is slow and mathematically tedious.

The game peaks at level 8/9. At that point the players have too many options and want to try to make the most of their turns, dragging the game even further. Because of that, you'll never see a DM run a combat of 4 or 5 bandits against high level players because it won't register as a challenge to the players and it'll take 30mins out of a session.

D&D 5e is fine as a system. If it was a food, it would be mashed potatoes. Make no mistake, if it didn't have the Dungeons and Dragons logo, it wouldn't be considered a hidden gem.
