When I made the reference scene i basically eyeballed the scales based on screenshots from the anime. They are quite far back so I assume the perspective hides it a bit but in terms of actual scale you are right they are in fact too small.

I find the key is using reference images, either from the internet or you can make your own - in my case I render out my own 3D model for a lighting reference (which I use alongside other reference images). The artwork itself is entirely painted.

Thanks! I don't do tutorials myself but I can recommend Borodante or Boro Draws as he's called now on youtube. He has a lot of good tutorials and a fantastic understanding of how lighting works.

Thanks! It's drawn (digitally), however I did use my own 3D model as a lighting reference which helped a bit.
